Sierra Blanca Regional Airport (KSRR) sits at 6,762 feet on the Fort Stanton mesa above Alto, New Mexico, about 15 nautical miles northeast of the resort village of Ruidoso that it serves. Owned and operated by the Village of Ruidoso, it is a high-altitude general aviation field with an ILS-served main runway, heavy military training traffic, and a newly resumed scheduled commercial service to Denver.
Sierra Blanca Regional Airport, also known locally as SBRA, is a public-use airport owned and operated by the Village of Ruidoso, located on the Fort Stanton mesa in Alto, New Mexico, roughly 15 nautical miles northeast of downtown Ruidoso. It replaced an earlier, much smaller airfield that sat within the village itself in a mountain valley prone to accidents. For a simulator pilot the appeal lies in its dramatic high-altitude mountain setting, its ILS approach onto a long runway, and a mix of general aviation, air taxi and frequent military high-altitude training traffic.
The airport lies on the Fort Stanton mesa in Alto, New Mexico, about 15 nautical miles (28 km) northeast of the central business district of Ruidoso, on roughly 1,665 acres off New Mexico State Highway 220, known locally as Airport Road. Albuquerque Center provides en-route radar service in the area, and Albuquerque Flight Service Station is available on frequency. Due to the surrounding mountainous terrain, the field is frequently used by military aircraft for high-altitude training.
Sierra Blanca Regional has two hard-surfaced, lit physical runways. Runway 06/24 is 8,096 feet long, with an ILS serving the runway 24 end. Runway 12/30 is the shorter cross runway, also hard-surfaced and lit, with a length of 6,284 feet from the 12 threshold and 6,436 feet from the 30 threshold. Field elevation is 6,762 feet above mean sea level.
Weather is available on the AWOS at 126.475 MHz. Albuquerque Center can be reached on 132.65 MHz, and Albuquerque Flight Service Station operates on 122.25 MHz. The common traffic advisory frequency and UNICOM is 122.8 MHz. An ILS approach is available to runway 24.
Sierra Blanca Regional Airport opened on 11 December 1987, built to replace the earlier, much smaller Ruidoso Municipal Airport, which was located within the village itself and had a poor safety record owing to its position in a mountain valley. Ruidoso was served by a succession of commuter airlines between 1976 and 2008, flying to Albuquerque, El Paso, Midland/Odessa and Dallas-Fort Worth using aircraft such as the Piper Navajo, Cessna 208 Caravan, Beechcraft 1300 and Swearingen Metroliner. Operators over the years included Roswell Airlines, Airways of New Mexico, Wise Airlines, Mesa Airlines, Air Ruidoso, Lone Star Airlines, Rio Grande Air and Pacific Wings (doing business as New Mexico Airlines). Lone Star Airlines briefly flew a 32-seat Dornier 328 turboprop to Dallas-Fort Worth via Roswell in 1995. In 2005 American Eagle Airlines announced plans for nonstop regional jet service to Dallas-Fort Worth, but this did not materialise, and Ruidoso instead joined a regional consortium that saw American Eagle serve nearby Roswell International Air Center.
The airport is fully certified under 14 CFR Part 139 and maintains aircraft rescue and firefighting services. It sees a mix of general aviation, military and air taxi operations, with military aircraft frequently using the field for high-altitude training given the surrounding mountainous terrain. A handful of aircraft, mostly single-engine types plus one jet, are based there. After the installation of a new FAA-certified AWOS restoring certified weather reporting, scheduled commercial jet service resumed on 25 June 2026 with Contour Airlines flying nonstop between Sierra Blanca Regional and Denver International Airport, four times weekly. A courtesy car and after-hours fuelling arrangements are available to visiting pilots, and the airport hosts the annual Mountain High Fly-In and Pine Top Car Show.
