Henry Tift Myers Airport is a general aviation field two nautical miles southeast of Tifton, Georgia, built as a World War II advanced twin-engine training base and now home to a mix of recreational, corporate and agricultural flying. It offers three lit hard-surfaced runways, including a 6,496-foot main strip served by an ILS, making it a capable stop for both light aircraft and business jets.
Henry Tift Myers Airport serves Tifton, the seat of Tift County in south Georgia, as the area's general aviation gateway. It began life as a wartime advanced flying training field and today handles a working mix of recreational flying, corporate aircraft, agricultural spraying and other utility operations, giving a simulator pilot a good sense of a busy rural American county airport with a genuine World War II pedigree.
The airport lies about two nautical miles southeast of downtown Tifton, Georgia, on roughly 826 acres of land. Approach and departure services are normally provided by Valdosta Approach; when Valdosta approach control is closed, Jacksonville ARTCC provides the service on the Valdosta RCAG frequencies of 133.7 and 323.3 MHz (SkyVector). There is no operating control tower at the field today, so traffic is coordinated on the local advisory frequency.
The airport has three physical runways, all hard-surfaced and lit. Runway 16/34 is the longest at 6,496 feet and carries an ILS on the 34 approach. Runway 10/28 is 3,786 feet long, and runway 04/22 is 3,269 feet long.
The field uses an A/D advisory frequency of 119.525 MHz, which also serves as Valdosta Approach/Departure. An AWOS-3 automated weather observation is broadcast on 118.525 MHz. Macon Radio can be reached on 122.35 MHz, and the CTAF/UNICOM frequency is 122.7 MHz.
The airfield was built in 1940, and while still under construction the Army Air Corps identified a need for it as a training airfield. Early construction included concrete runways, taxiways, a large parking apron, a control tower and several hangars, most of the support buildings being of utilitarian, semi-permanent frame construction. Tifton Army Airfield, also known as Turner AAF Auxiliary Field No. 9, was activated on 12 August 1940 and used by the Army Air Forces Flying Training Command's Southeast Training Center (later the Eastern Flying Training Command) for advanced two-engine flying training throughout the war. Aircraft flown there included Curtiss AT-9s and later TB-25 Mitchells. The field was inactivated on 28 December 1944, held on inactive status for the remainder of the war, and transferred to the Army Corps of Engineers on 21 September 1946 before title passed back to civil authorities in 1947. It was subsequently renamed in honour of Tifton native Colonel Henry T. "Hank" Myers, the first pilot of Air Force One.
The airport is owned by the Tifton and Tift County Airport Authority and functions as a general aviation facility with no scheduled airline service. It supports a broad range of activity, including recreational flying, agricultural spraying, corporate and business jet traffic, police and prisoner-transport flights, forest firefighting support and ultralight operations, and has been classified as a Level III facility under Georgia's airport system planning. Recent figures show about 26 based aircraft, split between single-engine, multi-engine and jet types, with roughly 19,200 annual aircraft operations recorded. Fixed-base services are provided by Walker Aviation. Prior permission is required for maintenance use of parts of the airfield.
