Dade Collier Training and Transition Airport lies deep in the Everglades of south Florida, in the community of Ochopee, and is one of the more unusual training fields a simulator pilot can visit thanks to its single vast 10,468 foot runway set amid wetlands. Built as the sole completed piece of a much larger jetport scheme, it now exists purely to support flight training, instrument approach practice and emergency-response operations rather than scheduled traffic.
Dade Collier Training and Transition Airport (TNT) is a remote training field in Ochopee, in south Florida, operated by the Miami-Dade Aviation Department and owned by Miami-Dade County. It has no scheduled airline service and exists chiefly as a facility where commercial, recreational and military pilots can safely practise instrument approaches on an exceptionally long runway, making it a distinctive stop for a simulator pilot wanting to fly large-aircraft-style training patterns over the Everglades.
The airport sits within the Everglades region of south Florida, in Ochopee, Miami-Dade County.
TNT has a single physical runway, 09/27, 10,468 feet long, hard-surfaced and lit, oriented east-west across the Everglades.
Traffic can be worked on Miami Center on 132.4 MHz, with Miami Radio available on 122.3 MHz. The field's own frequency, used as CTAF/UNICOM, is 123.0 MHz. There is no instrument landing system at TNT.
TNT is not a towered airport, and pilots should use the CTAF/UNICOM frequency of 123.0 MHz to make position calls and coordinate with other traffic in the vicinity, particularly given the training and touch-and-go use the field sees.
TNT continues to serve as a training and transition airport, giving commercial, recreational and military pilots the opportunity to safely practise instrument approaches on its long runway. Pre-authorisation is required for all operations associated with commercial activities and for aircraft over 12,500 pounds. Beyond flight training, the airport also supports aerial firefighting, law enforcement operations, and other emergency preparedness and response activity, reflecting its remote Everglades location and its role in Florida's wider aviation system.
