Tri-Cities Regional TN/VA Airport sits just outside Blountville, Tennessee, and is the principal airport for the Tri-Cities area formed by Bristol, Johnson City and Kingsport. It is operated by the Tri-Cities Airport Authority, whose board is drawn from the cities of Johnson City, Kingsport, Bristol (Tennessee) and Bristol (Virginia) together with Washington and Sullivan counties. For the simulator pilot it offers a mix of airline movements, general aviation traffic, an ILS approach onto its long main runway, and the interest of operating amid the ridge lines of the surrounding Appalachian terrain.
The airport lies in Sullivan County, Tennessee, about 12 nautical miles southwest of the combined Bristol/Johnson City/Kingsport urban area, at an elevation of 1,506 feet. It is a tower-controlled field with an operating control tower and full instrument approach capability, placing it within controlled airspace during hours of tower operation. Traffic in the surrounding area is worked by Nashville radio and approach/departure control, and the field falls within the Atlanta Air Route Traffic Control Center's area, with Nashville as the tie-in flight service station.
The airport has two physical runways. Runway 05/23 is the main runway, 7,996 feet long, hard-surfaced, lit, and equipped with an ILS on both ends. Runway 09/27 is the secondary, shorter runway, hard-surfaced and lit, with landing distances of 4,430 feet on runway 09 and 4,297 feet on runway 27.
Tri-Cities operates with the following frequencies: Approach 119.25 MHz, ATIS 118.25 MHz, CTAF 119.5 MHz, Departure 125.5 MHz, Ground 121.7 MHz, Nashville Radio 122.2 MHz, Tower 119.5 MHz, and UNICOM 122.95 MHz. The main runway, 05/23, is equipped with an ILS, while a number of NDBs (including Booie, Elizabethton, Rogersville and others) and the Holston Mountain VORTAC and Glade Spring VOR/DME lie within range for area navigation.
Traffic patterns for both runway 05/23 and runway 09/27 are left-hand.
Tri-Cities Regional TN/VA Airport is governed by the Tri-Cities Airport Authority, a body whose members are appointed jointly by the cities of Johnson City, Kingsport, Bristol (Tennessee) and Bristol (Virginia), together with Washington and Sullivan counties in Tennessee. In the mid-1930s, Johnson City and Kingsport each had their own separate airfield and airstrip before the current joint facility was developed to serve the wider Tri-Cities area.
The airport remains a publicly owned, tower-controlled field open to public use, with a control tower, wind indicator and segmented circle in operation. It offers 100LL avgas and Jet A fuel, along with major airframe and powerplant repair capability, and supports a range of services including cargo handling, charter flights, flight instruction and aircraft rental. It also hosts scheduled airline service, giving the field a mixed character of commercial and general aviation traffic.
