Space Florida Launch and Landing Facility sits within the Kennedy Space Center complex near Titusville, Florida, and is best known by its earlier name, the Shuttle Landing Facility, built to receive NASA's Space Shuttle orbiters on their return from orbit. It is now operated by Space Florida and forms part of a broader aerospace campus that includes rocket motor storage and a Reusable Launch Vehicle hangar. For a simulator pilot, the appeal lies chiefly in its runway: at over 15,000 feet it is among the longest in the world, and the surrounding Kennedy Space Center setting gives it an unmistakable character.
The field lies about six miles east of Titusville, Florida, on land within the Kennedy Space Center property on Florida's Space Coast. Orlando Approach/Departure is noted among the published frequencies for the facility, indicating that approach control in the area is handled from Orlando. The field sits close to other Space Florida and Kennedy Space Center facilities, including former Titan IV rocket motor storage buildings now used by United Launch Alliance for Atlas V rocket motor storage, and the nearby Reusable Launch Vehicle Hangar.
The aerodrome has a single physical runway, 15/33, measuring 15,001 feet with a hard surface and runway lighting; there is no ILS. The middle 8,000 feet of runway 15-33 is grooved, and published remarks note limited taxiway and ramp space at the field.
Published frequencies for the field include an A/D frequency of 134.95 MHz, a CTAF of 123.6 MHz, and a ground frequency of 121.75 MHz. A tower frequency of 128.55 MHz is listed for PMSV Metro Tower, alongside a further PMSV frequency of 34.46 MHz. The airfield was originally built as the Shuttle Landing Facility, the dedicated runway constructed for the Space Shuttle orbiters to return from orbit at Kennedy Space Center. Facilities in the surrounding area were built for related space programmes, including buildings originally constructed for Lockheed Martin's Titan IV rocket motors, which today serve United Launch Alliance for Atlas V rocket motor storage. Following the end of the Shuttle programme, the site was transferred to Space Florida, which has since developed it, together with adjoining land at Exploration Park, as a multi-user aerospace and launch support facility, including work with the United States Space Force and Space Launch Delta 45 on Space Launch Complex 20 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.
The facility is operated by Space Florida as part of its portfolio of launch and landing infrastructure at Kennedy Space Center, alongside facilities such as the Reusable Launch Vehicle Hangar and rocket motor storage buildings used by United Launch Alliance. Maintenance of the runway, its lighting and surfaces, along with the wider grounds, is carried out under contract on behalf of Space Florida, NASA, the Florida Department of Transportation and the FAA. Taxiway and ramp space at the field is limited, reflecting its specialised role within the wider Space Coast aerospace ecosystem rather than routine general aviation traffic.
