Overview

Newport State Airport, officially the Colonel Robert F. Wood Air Park, is a state-owned public-use airport in Newport County, Rhode Island, serving the city of Newport. It is one of six airports operated by the Rhode Island Airport Corporation. The field supports corporate traffic, visitors to Newport's festivals, boat owners using the local marinas, and a resident flight training and skydiving community, giving a sim pilot a varied mix of general aviation traffic to expect in the pattern.

History

Army Air Force Captain Robert F. Wood established the Newport Air Park on the site in 1946. Topographical maps by 1958 show two airstrips, one along the current 4/22 orientation and a second nearly perpendicular to it; both were paved by 1953, when the airport received an Air Force contract to maintain aircraft for local Air Force pilots to keep current. The State of Rhode Island acquired the airport in July 1960, and new construction of the runways and taxiways was completed by September 1967. The first documented aircraft accident at Newport, a gear-up landing, occurred in July 1964, and the first fatal accident was a mid-air collision between two general aviation aircraft on 23 April 1969. In 2011 part of the film Moonrise Kingdom was filmed at the airport, which covers an area of 221 acres.
