Rock Hill - York County Airport, also known locally as Bryant Field and identified by the IATA code RKH, is a city-owned general aviation reliever airport in Rock Hill, South Carolina. It sits just south of Charlotte, North Carolina, and is positioned to take pressure off the busier Charlotte Douglas International Airport by handling business and personal general aviation traffic. For a simulator pilot, it is a useful destination for practising an ILS approach on a single long runway in a relatively quiet, uncontrolled traffic environment close to a major metropolitan area.
The airport lies in Rock Hill, South Carolina, close to the North Carolina border and within the wider Charlotte, North Carolina terminal area. Charlotte Approach/Departure provides approach and departure control services to aircraft using the field, reflecting its proximity to the busier Charlotte airspace to the north.
KUZA has a single physical runway, 02/20, 5,492 feet long with a hard surface. The runway is lit for night operations, and an ILS approach is available to runway 02.
Charlotte Approach/Departure can be contacted on 120.05 MHz for arrivals and departures in the surrounding airspace. The airport's automated weather observations are broadcast on the ASOS frequency, 120.775 MHz. A clearance delivery frequency of 126.85 MHz is published for the field. As Rock Hill - York County Airport has no control tower, the common traffic advisory frequency and unicom service operate on 123.05 MHz, and pilots should use this frequency for self-announcing arrivals, departures and taxi movements on the airfield.
The airport was developed to replace the earlier Roddey Field as Rock Hill's principal aviation facility. In 1956 the Rock Hill-York County Aviation Commission, led by Dr H. H. Plemmons, selected a 364-acre site for the new airport, and Rock Hill City Council approved the land purchase in March 1957, with construction following soon after. The field opened in October 1959 as Rock Hill Municipal Airport and has since undergone numerous expansions and several name changes on its way to becoming today's Rock Hill - York County Airport. It marked its 65th anniversary in 2024, by which time it had grown to some 495 acres centred on its long runway. The airport is owned and operated by the City of Rock Hill, with a joint City/County Airport Commission advising on operational, planning and capital improvement matters.
Rock Hill - York County Airport is described as the premier general aviation airport for the Charlotte region, offering business and personal aviation users quick, streamlined arrival and departure capability without the congestion of a much larger commercial airport. The airfield's 8,400-square-foot terminal building is designed for the business traveller and includes a large conference room together with a ground-floor concourse area housing a pilot lounge, a pilot shop and flight planning facilities.
