The airport is located four nautical miles northeast of the central business district of Albemarle, North Carolina, and about 42 miles northeast of Charlotte. It lies within the Uwharrie Lakes Region, an area of extensive lakes and shoreline set among the Uwharrie Mountains. Charlotte Approach/Departure can be reached on 128.32 MHz for traffic in the wider area.
Stanly County Airport has two paved, lit runways. The main runway, 04R/22L, is 5,479 feet long with a hard surface and is equipped with an ILS on the 22L approach. The secondary runway, 04L/22R, is 3,492 feet long, also hard-surfaced and lit. Field elevation is 587 feet.
The tower/CTAF frequency is 126.275 MHz, with ground and clearance delivery on 121.75 MHz. An AWOS-III automated weather observation is broadcast on 128.175 MHz. Charlotte Approach/Departure operates on 128.32 MHz, and UNICOM is available on 123 MHz. Published instrument approaches include ILS, NDB and GPS RNAV procedures. The airport's control tower is operated by the 235th ATC Squadron of the North Carolina Air National Guard.
The airport lies within the Uwharrie Lakes Region, an area noted for its extensive lakes, over 175 miles of shoreline, and the Uwharrie Mountains, useful general landmarks when navigating toward the field from the surrounding countryside near Albemarle.
Stanly County Airport serves as a regional training site for the North Carolina Air National Guard, with the 118th Air Support Operations Squadron, 156th Weather Flight and 263d Combat Communications Squadron based at the airport's Air National Guard Station. The longer runway, 4R/22L, was frequently used as an assault landing strip by C-130 Hercules aircraft of the 145th Airlift Wing, an Air National Guard unit based in Charlotte that has since transitioned to the C-17 Globemaster III. The airport's 12,000 square foot passenger terminal was completed in December 2010.
Today the airport combines general aviation activity with military training, and for the twelve months to May 2023 recorded around 28,000 aircraft operations, roughly 77 a day, with a mix of 63 percent general aviation and 38 percent military movements; some 43 aircraft were then based there. Facilities include full-service and self-service avgas and full-service Jet A, with full-service fuelling hours from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, plus a pilot lounge with shower and quiet room, conference rooms, and a limited-time courtesy vehicle for flight crews. The control tower, run by the 235th ATC Squadron NCANG, operates Sunday through Saturday from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm.
