Wallops Flight Facility Airport (KWAL) is a NASA-operated airfield on Wallops Island, on Virginia's Eastern Shore, distinguished by three long paved runways well beyond what its small-airport classification might suggest. It supports NASA's aerospace research and test operations and is of interest to simulator pilots for its unusual runway lengths and its Patuxent-controlled radio environment.

Overview

Wallops Flight Facility Airport is a NASA-operated airfield situated on Wallops Island, Virginia. It supports aerospace research, testing and development activity, and for a simulator pilot it stands out for its combination of three long, well-lit paved runways with the relatively low general traffic levels typical of a specialised research site.

Airspace & Location

The airfield lies on Wallops Island on Virginia's Eastern Shore, roughly five nautical miles south of the settlement of Wallops Island itself, within Accomack County, and occupies around 617 acres of land. The field elevation is 30 feet.

Runways

KWAL has three physical runways, all hard-surfaced and lit. Runway 04/22 is the longest at 8,738 feet, Runway 10/28 measures 7,956 feet, and the shorter Runway 17/35 is 4,776 feet. There is no ILS at the field.

Radio & Navigation

Radio services are provided in conjunction with Patuxent: Approach/Departure is available on 127.95 MHz, and clearance delivery on 121.7 MHz, both under the Patuxent facility. ASOS automated weather is broadcast on 119.175 MHz, while the common traffic advisory, general information and tower frequency are all listed on 126.5 MHz.

History

The airfield's identity is tied to the former Naval Auxiliary Air Station Chincoteague, reflecting military origins on Wallops Island before the site's development into its current role under NASA.

The Airfield Today

Wallops Flight Facility Airport continues to operate under NASA, with weather information available via ASOS and radio communications coordinated through the Patuxent facility. There is no instrument landing system installed.
