Bakersfield Municipal Airport (L45) is a small city-owned general aviation field lying about three nautical miles south of downtown Bakersfield, California, in Kern County. It offers a single lit asphalt runway and traces its origins to a World War II Army Air Forces sub-base.

Overview

Bakersfield Municipal Airport, identified as L45, is a public-use general aviation airport owned by the City of Bakersfield. It sits close to the city it serves and is used predominantly by light single- and multi-engine training and touring traffic rather than commercial operations, making it a straightforward VFR destination for simulator pilots exploring California's Central Valley.

Airspace & Location

The airport is located approximately three nautical miles south of Bakersfield's central business district, within Kern County, California.

Runways

Bakersfield Municipal has a single physical runway, 16/34, with a hard surface measuring 3,997 feet in length. Both runway ends are lit. There is no ILS approach available at the field.

History

During the Second World War the airfield served as Bakersfield Army Air Field, operating as a sub-base of Hammer Field under the Air Transport Command. In 1943 it was notable as an early operating location for the Bell P-59 Airacomet, one of the first American jet fighters.

The Airfield Today

The airport remains city-owned and is used chiefly for general aviation. As of a 2011 survey it recorded around 25,000 aircraft operations annually, averaging roughly 68 movements per day, with 82 aircraft based on the field, the large majority single-engine types.
