Burgas Airport is Bulgaria's second-largest airport, serving the Black Sea resort city of Burgas and the wider seaside tourism region of the southeast coast. It sits close to the Sarafovo district a few kilometres northeast of the city centre and offers a long, lit hard-surface runway with an ILS approach, making it a straightforward and well-equipped destination for visiting simulator pilots.

Overview

Burgas Airport is an international airport in southeast Bulgaria, operated by Fraport Twin Star Airport Management, and ranks as the country's second-busiest airport after Sofia. It principally handles scheduled and charter traffic serving Burgas and the surrounding Black Sea resort towns, and for a simulator pilot it presents a substantial single-runway international field with full ILS guidance and a long hard-surfaced strip.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies near the northern neighbourhood of Sarafovo, approximately 10 km from the centre of Burgas, on Bulgaria's southeast Black Sea coast. As an international airport handling scheduled and charter services, it sits within controlled airspace appropriate to its traffic levels.

Runways

Burgas has a single physical runway, 04/22, orientated northeast-southwest. It is 10,484 feet long with a hard surface and is lit for night operations. An ILS is provided for runway 22.

Radio & Navigation

Approach can be contacted on 125.1 MHz. ATIS is broadcast on 120.95 MHz. The tower operates on 118 MHz. An ILS is available for runway 22.

History

Balkan Bulgarian Airlines began domestic services from Burgas to Plovdiv and Sofia on 29 June 1947 using Junkers Ju 52/3m aircraft. Through the 1950s and 1960s the airport was expanded and modernised, including construction of a concrete runway, and in 1970 it became a fully international airport serving 45 destinations. Rapid growth in Bulgaria's tourism industry placed heavy demands on the field, prompting major infrastructure investment; reconstruction and rehabilitation of the taxiway system, including taxiways H and A and the area adjacent to the runway holding point, began on 31 October 2016 as part of a Fraport Twin Star Airport Management investment exceeding six million euros, which also included renewal of the airfield lighting and approach light control and monitoring system.

The Airfield Today

Burgas Airport is managed by Fraport Twin Star Airport Management and continues to operate as a major gateway for the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, handling a mix of scheduled and charter airline services that principally support the region's tourism industry.
