Varna Airport is the principal gateway to Bulgaria's Black Sea coast, serving the city of Varna and nearby resorts such as Golden Sands, Albena and Balchik. It is the third largest airport in Bulgaria and offers an ILS-equipped runway suitable for a wide range of traffic, making it a straightforward destination for a simulator pilot flying into the region.

Overview

Varna Airport serves the historic Bulgarian maritime city of Varna and the wider northeastern coastal region, acting as the main air gateway to the Black Sea resorts. It is the third largest airport in the country and, with a single long, lit hard-surface runway equipped with an ILS, offers a realistic and accessible destination for pilots flying larger aircraft types in the simulator, particularly during the busy summer holiday season when the field sees its heaviest traffic.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies close to the town of Aksakovo, around 10 kilometres from the centre of Varna, on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast. As a large civil airport handling scheduled and charter airline traffic, it sits within controlled airspace appropriate to a major regional facility, with dedicated approach, tower and ATIS frequencies serving the field.

Runways

Varna has a single physical runway, 09/27, a hard-surfaced strip 8224 feet in length and lit for night operations. An instrument landing system serves runway 09, giving precision approach guidance from the west; runway 27 is available for the reciprocal direction.

Radio & Navigation

Pilots can expect to work Varna Approach on 121 MHz, with airport information available on the ATIS at 118.075 MHz, and Varna Tower on 119.5 MHz for the airport environment. The ILS on runway 09 provides an instrument approach aid for arrivals from that direction.

History

Varna Airport underwent a period of closure from 15 October 2011 until 28 February 2012 while its runway was reconstructed, with flights during that time diverted to operate via Burgas Airport instead. On 24 May 2013, an Air VIA Airbus A320-232 (registration LZ-MDR), arriving from Leipzig, overran runway 09 after landing, crossing the runway-end safety area and striking the perimeter fence before coming to rest beyond the airport boundary; this accident was the subject of a formal investigation report by Bulgaria's Aircraft Accident Investigation Unit.

The Airfield Today

The airport remains a major seasonal gateway, with its busiest period running from the end of May to the beginning of October, reflecting the summer holiday demand for the nearby Black Sea resorts of Golden Sands, Albena and Balchik. It continues to handle both scheduled and charter airline services into Varna and the surrounding region.
