Rijeka Airport (LDRI) is Croatia's international gateway serving the city of Rijeka, sited on the island of Krk near the town of Omišalj in the northern Adriatic. It offers a single long hard runway with instrument approach capability, handling scheduled and charter traffic that peaks heavily in the summer season.

Overview

Rijeka Airport lies on the island of Krk near Omišalj, serving the city of Rijeka on Croatia's northern Adriatic coast. It is operated by Rijeka Airport Ltd. and handles international, domestic, transit and charter flights alongside general aviation and cargo movements. For a simulator pilot it offers a substantial single runway with ILS guidance, set in a scenic coastal and island environment, with most traffic concentrated in the summer months when low-cost carriers bring tourists to the northern Croatian coast.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits on the island of Krk in the North Adriatic, classified as ICAO airport class 4C, some 17 km on a bearing of 139 degrees geographic from the Rijeka station. It is roughly an hour's flight time context away from Pula and Trieste, and around ninety minutes from Zagreb and Ljubljana in general travel terms, reflecting its position within the wider Kvarner Gulf region.

Runways

The field has a single physical runway, 14/32, oriented north-west/south-east, 8193 feet long with a hard surface and runway lighting. Runway 14 is equipped with ILS. Field elevation is 253 feet.

Radio & Navigation

Approach and Tower are both listed on 119 MHz.

History

Before the Second World War Rijeka was divided between Yugoslavia and Italy, with the Yugoslav part of the city served by the airfield at Sušak; domestic carrier Aeroput opened a route linking Sušak to Zagreb in 1930, extending links to Belgrade, Borovo, Ljubljana, Sarajevo, Split and Zagreb by 1936, while the Italian part of the city was connected by Ala Littoria. The old Grobnik airfield near Rijeka struggled to accommodate larger aircraft because its runways lay close to hills to the east of the city, prompting planners to choose the Krk site after also considering locations near Opatija and Urinj. Rijeka Airport opened in May 1970, with the first departing aircraft carrying Josip Broz Tito and his wife. On 23 May 1971 Aviogenex Flight 130 crashed on approach to the airport in poor weather, killing 78 people, including the Croatian poet Josip Pupacic and his family, with five survivors.

The Airfield Today

The airport operates year-round, 365 days a day, handling international, domestic, transit and charter flights as well as general aviation and cargo, with operating hours published by NOTAM or AIP Supplement. Fuelling is provided by INA Avio Service, offering Jet A-1 and AVGAS 100LL. Fire and rescue cover up to Category 10 is available on request with three hours' prior notice. The single runway has no parallel taxiway, so aircraft must taxi back along the runway to reach the terminal apron.
