Almería Airport (LEAM/LEI) lies on Spain's Costa de Almería, about 9 km east of Almería city centre in Andalusia, and is operated by AENA as the principal gateway to this stretch of the Mediterranean coast. It offers a single long, ILS-equipped runway and handles a mix of scheduled and seasonal charter traffic, making it a useful and instantly recognisable VFR and IFR destination for visiting pilots.

Overview

Almería Airport, known by the IATA code LEI and the ICAO code LEAM, serves the city of Almería and the wider Costa de Almería region of Andalusia. It sits close to popular destinations such as the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, El Ejido, Mojácar, Roquetas de Mar and Vera, and is operated by the Spanish airport authority AENA. For a visiting sim pilot it presents a single substantial hard runway equipped with an ILS, set against the backdrop of the Almería coastline and its surrounding tourist areas.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies approximately 9 km east of Almería city centre, in the province of Almería, Andalusia. It is positioned within the coastal strip that serves as the gateway to the Costa de Almería, close to well-known tourist areas including the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, El Ejido, Mojácar, Roquetas de Mar and Vera.

Runways

Almería has a single physical runway, 07/25, of asphalt construction and lit for night operations. Runway 25 is published at 10,465 ft and carries an ILS, while the reciprocal threshold, runway 07, is listed at 9,978 ft. The field elevation is 46 ft.

Radio & Navigation

Almería is served by an approach frequency of 118.35 MHz, the same frequency (118.35 MHz) is used for tower, and ground movements are handled on 121.7 MHz. An ILS is available on runway 25, supporting instrument approaches to that runway.

Visual Reference Points

The airport sits close to a number of well-known coastal landmarks that are useful for visual orientation, including the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park and the towns of El Ejido, Mojácar, Roquetas de Mar and Vera, all in the immediate vicinity of the field along the Costa de Almería.

History

Almería Airport is a public airport that has long served as the main air gateway to the Costa de Almería, handling both scheduled and charter traffic under AENA ownership. In July 2025, a magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck the area, causing damage to the terminal building.

The Airfield Today

Almería continues to operate as an active regional airport within the AENA network, handling a mix of year-round scheduled services and seasonal charter operations. Carriers using the field include Iberia, Vueling, easyJet, Ryanair, Jet2.com, Binter Canarias, Luxair, Smartwings, Transavia and TUI fly Belgium, connecting Almería to destinations across Spain and wider Europe. This level of activity makes it a realistic and busy controlled-airport destination for simulated flights along the southern Spanish coast.
