Asturias Airport (ICAO: LEAS, IATA: OVD) is the only international airport serving the Principality of Asturias, sited near Ranón in the municipality of Castrillón on Spain's northern coast. Operated by AENA, it offers a single long, ILS-equipped runway and handles scheduled domestic and seasonal international services, making it a straightforward but weather-sensitive destination for a simulator pilot flying in from the Bay of Biscay side of Spain.

Overview

Asturias Airport is the sole international airport of the Principality of Asturias, lying close to the village of Ranón in the municipality of Castrillón. It is operated by the Spanish airport authority AENA and handles primarily scheduled domestic flights alongside seasonal international routes. For a visiting sim pilot the field is notable for its single, long hard-surfaced runway with an ILS approach and its coastal position, which brings the low cloud and sea fog typical of Spain's Cantabrian coast into play for approach planning.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits in the Anzu area, in the parish of Santiago del Monte, within the municipality of Castrillón, roughly 15 km from Avilés, 40 km from Gijón and 47 km from Oviedo, the regional capital, on Spain's northern Cantabrian coast.

Runways

Asturias Airport has a single physical runway, 11/29, a hard-surfaced strip roughly 7,190 to 7,192 feet long. Both directions are lit, and runway 29 is equipped with an ILS for instrument approaches.

Radio & Navigation

Radio services include Approach on 118.15 MHz, Ground on 121.7 MHz and Tower on 118.15 MHz. An ILS is available for runway 29.

History

Asturias Airport opened on 11 June 1968, with its first commercial route linking the field to Madrid; a further route soon after connected Santiago de Compostela with Barcelona via Asturias and Bilbao. The airport underwent its first major expansion in 1980 ahead of the 1982 FIFA World Cup, during which the aircraft parking apron was doubled in size and additional check-in desks, boarding gates, a cafeteria and shops were added. Further upgrades to the terminal building and apron followed in 1994 and 2000. A more substantial programme of works in 2003 added a second passenger floor and three jet bridges, allowing direct boarding from the terminal onto aircraft.

The Airfield Today

Asturias Airport continues to operate as the principal air gateway to the Principality of Asturias, handling scheduled domestic services to points including Madrid, Barcelona, Málaga, Alicante, Seville and the Canary Islands, together with seasonal international routes such as London-Gatwick, Paris-Orly, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Dublin. Traffic is handled from a single terminal building fitted with jet bridges.
