Sabadell Airfield (LELL) is a small general-aviation aerodrome on the northern edge of Barcelona, Catalonia, long associated with light aircraft training and club flying. It sits close to the city of Sabadell and within easy reach of the wider Barcelona airspace, making it a useful VFR destination for pilots wanting to avoid the bustle of the major international airport nearby. The field retains its original single hard runway and a working control tower, and remains home to one of the region's principal flying clubs.

Overview

Sabadell Airfield is a small general-aviation aerodrome serving the city of Sabadell, just north-west of Barcelona in Catalonia. It has a long-standing role as a base for light aviation training and club flying, and is of interest to the sim pilot as a compact, historic airfield close to the busier Barcelona terminal area.

Airspace & Location

The airfield lies near Sabadell, in Catalonia, Spain, within reach of the Barcelona control area given its proximity to Barcelona itself. Pilots planning a visit should expect to operate in the vicinity of the wider Barcelona airspace structure, though the field itself is served by its own tower and ground frequencies.

Runways

Sabadell has a single hard-surfaced, lit runway aligned 13/31. Runway 13 offers a landing/take-off length of 3599 ft, while the reciprocal runway 31 offers 2953 ft. There is no ILS installed on the field.

Radio & Navigation

The aerodrome is served by three published frequencies: ACBS on 123.5 MHz for the Aeroclub Barcelona Sabadell, Sabadell Ground (callsign GMC) on 121.605 MHz, and Sabadell Tower (callsign TWR) on 120.805 MHz, indicating that the field operates with an active control tower rather than a simple A/G service.

History

The land for Sabadell's airfield was offered to the Ministry of War by the mayor of Sabadell, Salvador Ribé, following an air festival held at Camp n'Oriac in 1931 and the founding of the Aeroclub de Sabadell. The government accepted the cession of the land and a technical project for the airfield was drawn up in 1933; the field was officially inaugurated on 1 August 1934 for both military and civil aviation. Activity was revived after an International Air Festival in 1949 and the creation of the Aeroclub Barcelona-Sabadell in 1953, and in 1954 the Ministry of the Air formally accepted the cession of the airfield, by then covering 76 hectares. A control tower was inaugurated in 1977, and from 1979, under an order of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the field was opened to national and international air traffic carrying passengers on light aircraft.

The Airfield Today

Sabadell remains an active general-aviation airfield and is the home of the Aeroclub Barcelona Sabadell, which continues to operate training and club flying from the field. The presence of a tower and ground frequency indicates an active air traffic service for visiting pilots.
