Menorca Airport (LEMH/MAH) lies some 4.5 km southwest of Mahón, the Balearic island's capital, and is the principal gateway for holiday and charter traffic to Menorca. Operated by AENA, it offers a single long, lit runway equipped with ILS, making it straightforward for both airline and general aviation traffic to locate and approach from over the Mediterranean.

Overview

Menorca Airport, identified as LEMH (IATA: MAH), serves the island of Menorca, one of Spain's Balearic Islands, and sits close to the capital, Mahón. It is operated by the Spanish airport authority AENA and functions primarily as a seasonal and charter airport, with traffic peaking heavily between April and October. For a simulator pilot it offers an interesting mix of a single substantial precision-approach runway set against a compact single-terminal Mediterranean island airport, with the added historical interest of a predecessor grass airfield still active nearby as a flying club.

Airspace & Location

The airport is located approximately 4.5 km southwest of the city of Mahón, on the Balearic island of Menorca in the western Mediterranean. It is served by approach, tower and ground radio positions, indicating it operates as a controlled aerodrome with radar and procedural services available to arriving and departing traffic.

Runways

Menorca Airport has a single physical runway, 01/19, of hard surface construction and lit for night operations, equipped with an ILS approach. Runway 01 is 8,373 ft long and runway 19 is 7,721 ft long, reflecting the differing declared distances available in each direction. Field elevation is 285 ft.

Radio & Navigation

Radio services at Menorca comprise Approach on 119.65 MHz, ATIS on 112.6 MHz, Ground on 121.75 MHz and Tower on 118.2 MHz. The runway is equipped with an ILS, supporting instrument approaches in either direction.

History

The first airfield on Menorca, San Luis Aerodrome, was built in the late 1930s during the Spanish Civil War with an 850 metre runway. It was used through the 1940s by aircraft from neighbouring Mallorca, and in 1949 Spain's Ministry of Aviation made it a fully civilian airfield; that August it received its first scheduled flight, from Barcelona, operated by Aviaco using a Bristol 170. The runway was extended twice during the late 1950s and early 1960s to accommodate the larger Douglas DC-4, and in September 1965 the airfield was officially renamed Mahón Airport. Rising passenger numbers through the 1960s created demand for a larger airport with a longer runway; construction of the current site began in 1967, and the new Menorca Airport opened on 24 March 1969. San Luis has since continued in use as a flying club for light aircraft. Passenger traffic grew steadily through the 1970s and 1980s, exceeding one million a year by 1986, prompting construction of the present terminal, completed in 1987 and opened to the public in May 1988. Further expansion and refurbishment followed during the 1990s and 2000s, with the airport reaching its current form in 2008. A partial roof collapse occurred during construction work on 14 September 2006, temporarily trapping twenty workers and injuring three. Annual passenger volume first exceeded three million in 2016, and in April 2024 AENA announced plans for further expansion of the airport between 2027 and 2031.

The Airfield Today

Menorca Airport is operated by AENA and remains chiefly a seasonal and charter destination, busiest between April and October, with a wide range of European airlines including Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2, TUI and Iberia operating scheduled and charter services. The airport has a single terminal on two levels, with arrivals on the lower floor and departures on the upper floor, and is reported to operate from around 7:00 to 00:30. The airport's predecessor field at San Luis continues to operate as a flying club for light aircraft.
