Región de Murcia International Airport (LEMI/RMU) is a modern commercial airport near the village of Corvera in southeastern Spain, roughly 25 kilometres south of Murcia city. Opened in January 2019 to replace the former San Javier military-civil aerodrome, it offers a single long runway with an ILS approach, making it a straightforward destination for simulator pilots flying airliner or general-aviation types into the Costa Cálida region.

Overview

Región de Murcia International Airport, informally known as Murcia-Corvera, is an international airport in southeast Spain that opened in January 2019, replacing the older Murcia-San Javier Airport. It was inaugurated as the Aeropuerto Internacional de la Región de Murcia - Juan de la Cierva, named after the Spanish aeronautical pioneer who invented the autogyro. For a simulator pilot the field offers a single, very long hard-surfaced runway equipped with an ILS, giving a modern, purpose-built international airport experience in a part of Spain not otherwise well served by large-scale civil aviation infrastructure.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies at Corvera, situated between the villages of Corvera and Los Martínez del Puerto in the Región de Murcia, southeastern Spain, at a field elevation of 640 feet. It sits at coordinates 37.8031N, 1.1247W.

Runways

The airfield has a single physical runway, 05/23, oriented northeast-southwest. It is 9,842 feet long with a hard surface and is lit along its full length. Runway 23 is additionally equipped with an ILS instrument approach.

Radio & Navigation

Runway 23 is served by an ILS approach.

History

The airport traces its origins to plans first raised in the 1960s for an international airport in southeastern Spain, with the company Aeromur formed in 2002 as a vehicle for its investment, finance and promotion. In 2006 the regional government put the airport's construction and operation out to tender. It was built to replace Murcia-San Javier Airport, whose expansion had become impractical because that site was primarily a military airfield and home to the Academia General del Aire, the Spanish Air Force's officer training school. The new airport was officially opened on 15 January 2019 by King Felipe VI of Spain as the Aeropuerto Internacional de la Región de Murcia - Juan de la Cierva, honouring the Spanish aeronautical engineer who invented the autogyro. In 2024 the Regional Assembly of Murcia approved a commission to investigate a failed settlement for damages connected with the airport's construction and operation, amid criticism that the closure of San Javier Airport, which had served over two million passengers in 2007, in favour of Corvera was not justified, since Corvera did not surpass 800,000 passengers until 2023, and that construction and operating costs had allegedly exceeded 300 million euros despite earlier assurances the project would cost citizens of Murcia nothing.

The Airfield Today

Región de Murcia International Airport continues to operate as the main commercial gateway for the Región de Murcia, having grown its passenger traffic to over 800,000 by 2023.
