Reus Airport (LERS/REU) is a large public aerodrome on the Costa Daurada coast of Catalonia, midway between the town of Constantí and the city of Reus and about 8 km from Tarragona. Operated by AENA, it began life in 1935 as an Aeroclub de Reus airfield and later served as a military base before becoming the busy civilian gateway it is today, offering an ILS-equipped runway well suited to both airline and general aviation traffic.

Overview

Reus Airport is a substantial public aerodrome on Spain's Costa Daurada, run by the national airport authority AENA. It began as a civil flying club field in the 1930s, passed through decades of military use, and has since grown into a busy scheduled and charter airport serving the Tarragona and Costa Daurada holiday coast. For a visiting sim pilot it offers a long, hard-surfaced, lit runway with an ILS approach, set in an area close to Tarragona's UNESCO World Heritage sites and the PortAventura theme park.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies close to the Mediterranean coast in Catalonia, roughly equidistant between the town of Constantí and the city of Reus, and about 8 km (5 nautical miles) from Tarragona city centre. It sits within easy reach of the Costa Daurada beach resorts of Salou and Cambrils, and is not far from the forested Mountains of Prades to the west. Barcelona lies some 103 km to the northeast.

Runways

Reus has a single physical runway, 07/25, of hard surface construction and lit for night operations. Runway 25 is listed at 8018 ft in length and is equipped with an ILS approach; the reciprocal, runway 07, is listed at 7180 ft. Field elevation is 230 ft.

Radio & Navigation

Approach and Tower share the frequency 118.15 MHz, while Ground operates on 121.7 MHz. An ILS is available for runway 25, providing an instrument approach into the field.

History

Reus Airport was founded in 1935 by the Aeroclub de Reus as a civil flying field. During the Spanish Civil War it served as a Republican air base, and following the Nationalist victory it was retained by the Spanish Air Force as a military installation. The airfield was demilitarised in the late 1990s and subsequently converted into a fully civilian airport under the administration of AENA, the Spanish airports authority.

The Airfield Today

Reus is today operated by AENA as a public commercial airport handling scheduled and charter services, and was for some years a base for Ryanair before that operation was scaled back. It continues to see regular seasonal traffic from carriers including easyJet, Jet2.com, TUI Airways, Vueling and Ryanair, alongside general aviation movements, making use of its long lit runway and ILS approach on runway 25.
