Chambéry Savoie Mont Blanc Airport (LFLB) lies at Viviers-du-Lac in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, wedged between Lac du Bourget and the surrounding Alpine massifs, making it a spectacular but demanding approach for visiting pilots. It combines scheduled airline traffic, ski-charter flights and a significant business aviation operation, and offers an ILS-equipped hard runway alongside a shorter grass strip.

Overview

Chambéry Savoie Mont Blanc Airport sits at Viviers-du-Lac, close to the shores of Lac du Bourget and within easy reach of the city of Chambéry itself. Operated by VINCI Airports under a public service mandate from the Savoie General Council, the field acts as a gateway to some of the largest ski resorts in the French Alps, handling scheduled routes to the UK, tour-operator ski charters, and a substantial business aviation movement through its dedicated terminal. For the visiting sim pilot, the appeal lies as much in the mountain-and-lake setting as in the mix of airline, charter and general aviation traffic using the field.

Airspace & Location

The airport is located at Viviers-du-Lac in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France, set between Lac du Bourget and the surrounding Alpine terrain. It lies within French controlled airspace, with an approach and tower service provided locally; the immediate area is dominated by high ground to the east and the lake to the north, which shapes the arrival and departure paths.

Runways

Chambéry Savoie Mont Blanc has a hard, lit main runway aligned 18/36, with an ILS serving runway 18; the declared length is 6,162 ft when used as runway 36 and 5,848 ft when used as runway 18, reflecting a threshold difference between the two directions. A second, unlit grass runway pair, 18L/36R, is also available, with declared lengths of 2,288 ft for 18L and 1,963 ft for 36R. Field elevation is 771 ft.

Radio & Navigation

Chambéry provides an approach, tower and ATIS service, all under the callsign CHAMBERY. Approach (APP) operates on 123.7 MHz, the Tower (TWR) on 118.3 MHz, and the ATIS broadcasts on 124.575 MHz. The main runway 18 is equipped with an ILS for instrument approaches.

Visual Reference Points

Lac du Bourget, immediately adjacent to the airport, together with the surrounding Alpine ridgelines, forms the principal visual reference for pilots approaching Chambéry, with the town of Chambéry itself lying a short distance to the south.

History

The airport was renamed Chambéry Savoie Mont Blanc Airport following a period of renovation, with the terminal and business aviation facility officially reopening after several months of restoration work, giving the site improved passenger and business aviation infrastructure and lending it a stronger international identity for the Savoie region. In one winter season the airport reached a milestone of 10,000 passengers per weekend, equating to 172,407 passengers for the season as a whole. VINCI Airports was appointed by the Savoie General Council as operator of the airport under a new public service mandate running for a 16-year term from 1 July 2013, continuing a partnership that had previously been held between VINCI Airports and Kéolis under a renewable seven-year mandate.

The Airfield Today

Today the airport handles scheduled airline services to the UK, ski charter flights operated by tour operators, and a dedicated business aviation terminal that makes it one of the busiest French airports for business aviation traffic in winter. Fuel available includes AVGAS 100LL and Jet A1. During the winter period the field operates seven days a week between 0730 and 2100 local time. Prior permission is required for some operations.
