Grenoble Le Versoud is a general aviation aerodrome in the Isère department, tucked beneath the Belledonne massif on the northeastern fringe of Grenoble. Operated under the auspices of the Grenoble Chamber of Commerce and home to a long-established flying club, it is one of the busiest light-aviation fields outside the Paris region and offers striking Alpine scenery to any visiting pilot.

Overview

Grenoble Le Versoud is a light-aviation aerodrome serving the Grenoble conurbation, sited at Le Versoud in the Isère department of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. It is managed by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Grenoble and hosts the Aéroclub du Grésivaudan alongside parachuting activity, making it a lively general aviation base rather than a commercial airport. For a simulator pilot it offers an approach hemmed in by the Belledonne and Chartreuse massifs, with the city of Grenoble itself close at hand.

Airspace & Location

The aerodrome lies at Le Versoud, Isère, on the northeastern edge of Grenoble, at the foot of the Belledonne mountains and within sight of the Chartreuse massif to the north. It sits at an elevation of 719 feet, at coordinates 45.2181N, 5.8486E. Grenoble's other airfield, Grenoble-Isère at Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Geoirs (LFLS), lies further away to the northwest and handles commercial traffic, leaving Le Versoud as the general aviation field close to the city.

Runways

The aerodrome has two parallel north-east/south-west runways. Runway 04/22 has a hard surface, is lit, and measures roughly 2941 feet on the 04 threshold and 2667 feet on the 22 threshold. Alongside it, runway 04L/22R is grass, also lit, at 2927 feet. There is no ILS.

Radio & Navigation

Traffic information is available on ATIS at 125.225 MHz, with ground on 121.65 MHz and tower on 121 MHz. There is no instrument landing system, so arrivals should plan for a visual approach.

History

The grass airfield at Le Versoud was opened in 1948 as a private field. Its role changed significantly in 1967, when the closure of the older Grenoble-Eybens airfield prompted a reorganisation of aviation in the Grenoble area: the small grass strip at Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Geoirs was promoted to become the region's commercial airport, eventually known as Grenoble-Isère, while Le Versoud was itself enlarged and modernised the same year and given over to light aviation under the name Grenoble-Le Versoud.

The Airfield Today

Le Versoud today is home to the Aéroclub du Grésivaudan, which trains pilots and offers discovery flights over the surrounding massifs, and the field is also used for parachute jumping, with aircraft climbing out over views of the Chartreuse and Belledonne ranges. The aerodrome hosts occasional public events, including motoring gatherings and open-air film screenings, and has supported biodiversity survey work carried out on the airfield site. It continues to be managed by the Grenoble Chamber of Commerce and Industry as a general aviation base close to the city.
