Lyon Bron Airport lies at Chassieu on the eastern edge of Lyon, and is France's third-busiest airport for business aviation. It offers a single hard-surfaced runway, full ATC service, and round-the-clock operation geared almost entirely towards executive jets, helicopters and medical flights rather than airline traffic.
Lyon Bron sits close to the centre of Lyon and is dedicated to business aviation, handling small and medium jets and helicopters rather than scheduled airline services. It is described as France's third-largest airport for business aviation, offering access to more than 2,000 European and transatlantic destinations not always served by regular airlines, and is also used for medical evacuation and organ-transport flights. For a visiting sim pilot it is a busy, controlled general aviation and business jet field just outside a major city, with 24-hour operation.
The airfield is located at Chassieu in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, in the immediate vicinity of Lyon city centre. It lies at an elevation of 653 feet. Given its role as a controlled airport handling business jet traffic close to Lyon, pilots should expect to operate within controlled airspace and to work with the published approach, tower and ground frequencies when transiting or joining.
Lyon Bron has a single physical runway, 16/34, with a hard, lit surface measuring around 4,980 feet in length. There is no ILS available at the field.
Lyon Bron provides a full suite of radio services: Lyon Approach on 119.45 MHz, ATIS on 128.125 MHz, Ground on 121.7 MHz and Tower on 118.1 MHz. There is no ILS at the field, so arrivals and departures should be planned around visual or other non-precision procedures in conjunction with the tower and approach service.
Lyon Bron has long been associated with business and executive aviation rather than scheduled airline services, and is described as France's third-largest airport for this type of traffic. The airport joined the VINCI Airports network in 2016, and since then has continued to develop its role as a hub for corporate jets, helicopters and medical flights serving the Lyon region.
Lyon Bron operates 24 hours a day and is dedicated to business aviation, with facilities designed to offer speed and privacy to passengers using executive jets and helicopters. Several operators are based at the field, including Oyonnair, Harmony Aircraft Air Services, Jetcorp and Mont Blanc Hélicoptères, with Pan Européenne establishing itself there in 2020. During the Covid-19 crisis the airport supported more than 150 medical flights, transporting caregivers and patients between regions. In 2023 Lyon Bron was set to welcome its first fully electric aircraft, made available to flight schools based at the airport as part of a wider effort to reduce noise and carbon emissions.
