Cannes–Mandelieu Airport (LFMD) sits on the French Riviera a few kilometres west of Cannes, sandwiched between the Mediterranean coast and the hills above the Siagne valley. It is a long-established general aviation hub, ranking among Europe's busiest fields for light aircraft, business jets and flight training, and is paired administratively with Nice Côte d'Azur under the same operator.

Overview

Cannes–Mandelieu is a historic Riviera aerodrome that has evolved from the region's original commercial gateway into one of the busiest general aviation airports in Europe. It is operated by Aéroports de la Côte d'Azur, the same company that runs Nice Côte d'Azur Airport, and today its traffic is dominated by flying clubs, flight schools, business aviation and government flying rather than scheduled airline services. For a simulator pilot it offers an interesting mix of a coastal approach, hills close to the field, and a control tower environment without the scale of its larger neighbour at Nice.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies about 5 km west of Cannes and immediately east of Mandelieu-la-Napoule, in the Alpes-Maritimes département of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. It sits close to the coast at the mouth of the Siagne valley, with rising terrain inland; this local geography was historically the reason large commercial aircraft could not be accommodated here, prompting the development of Nice as the region's main airport. The field is served by a control tower and ground service, placing arriving traffic under ATC in the vicinity of the aerodrome.

Runways

Cannes–Mandelieu has three physical runway alignments. The main hard runway is orientated 17/35, with the 17 threshold giving 4652 ft available and the 35 threshold, which carries an ILS, giving 4117 ft; both directions are lit. A second hard runway lies on the 04/22 alignment, with 2221 ft available on runway 04 and 2388 ft on runway 22, also lit. A parallel grass runway, 17L/35R, offers 1803 ft in each direction and is lit. Field elevation is 7 ft.

Radio & Navigation

Cannes traffic is worked on Cannes Tower on 118.625 MHz, with Cannes Ground on 121.8 MHz for surface movements. An ATIS broadcast is available on 127.475 MHz. Runway 35 is equipped with an ILS for instrument approaches.

History

Flying in the Siagne valley near Cannes dates back to 1905, and the airport was established on its present site in 1930 by private individuals. It became a government-run airport in 1937 under the Air Secretariat, with its area subsequently expanded to 115 hectares spanning the communes of Cannes and Mandelieu. In this period, before Nice's airport existed, Cannes was the only airport serving the whole of the Côte d'Azur and hosted Air France services. Following damage in the Second World War, the facilities were rebuilt after the Liberation and a 1,100-metre runway was constructed, at which point the field took the name Cannes-Mandelieu. As commercial aircraft grew larger, the surrounding hills made further expansion at Cannes impractical, leading to the search for a new site at the mouth of the Var plain that became Nice Côte d'Azur Airport. In 1966 the French government granted the airport concession to the Alpes-Maritimes Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and on 25 July 2008 the concession passed to the newly formed company Aéroports de la Côte d'Azur, which also manages Nice and later the Gulf of Saint-Tropez airport.

The Airfield Today

Cannes-Mandelieu now ranks as the second or third busiest airport in Europe for general aviation movements, though this activity represents only around 17 percent of its overall traffic. The bulk of flying is generated by flying clubs, flight schools, government aviation and clubs dedicated to aerobatics training, alongside business aviation. The airport operates as part of a system with Nice Côte d'Azur for the handling of private flights, since heavier aircraft cannot land at Cannes, while lighter aircraft benefit from parking facilities suited to their needs. The site also hosts the departmental fire and rescue service (SDIS) base.
