Saint-Étienne–Bouthéon Airport lies in the Loire department of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, serving the city of Saint-Étienne from the commune of Andrézieux-Bouthéon. It offers a substantial hard-surfaced runway pair at over 1,300 feet elevation, making it a straightforward destination for VFR pilots exploring the region, though scheduled traffic has been sparse in recent years.

Overview

Saint-Étienne–Bouthéon Airport (ICAO: LFMH) is a public airport serving Saint-Étienne, France, situated at Andrézieux-Bouthéon in the Loire department of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Historically used by low-cost carriers, the field has seen reduced scheduled activity in recent years, making it of interest to sim pilots as a quieter regional destination with a long, lit runway.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits at Andrézieux-Bouthéon, some 12 kilometres north-northwest of the city centre of Saint-Étienne, within the Loire department of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The larger Lyon–Saint-Exupéry Airport lies roughly 77 kilometres to the north-east and has historically absorbed some of the traffic diverted away from Saint-Étienne–Bouthéon.

Runways

The airport has one physical runway, aligned 17/35, with a hard, lit surface. The 35 threshold offers 6,980 feet of usable length, while the 17 threshold offers 6,576 feet, giving pilots ample distance for a wide range of aircraft types. There is no ILS approach available.

Radio & Navigation

Air traffic services are provided under the callsign Saint Etienne. Approach (APP) and Tower (TWR) both operate on 118.65 MHz, while the ATIS broadcasts on 132.8 MHz.

History

In February 2017 the airport's management withdrew subsidies previously paid to low-cost carriers, prompting Ryanair and Pegasus Airlines to cancel all their services to Saint-Étienne by 2018. This left the airport without scheduled services for several years, with only occasional holiday charters, mainly to Mediterranean destinations, keeping it in use. Passengers during this period were largely redirected to Lyon–Saint-Exupéry Airport. In 2025, ASL Airlines France introduced seasonal flights to Bejaia, marking a modest return of scheduled operations.

The Airfield Today

Current scheduled activity is limited, with ASL Airlines France operating seasonal summer holiday flights to Bejaia. For much of the preceding decade the airport relied chiefly on occasional charter flights rather than regular scheduled services, following the departure of its former low-cost operators.
