Le Castellet Airport (LFMQ) is a business-aviation aerodrome in the Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, sited immediately alongside the Circuit Paul Ricard motor-racing venue. Developed from the 1960s under Paul Ricard's patronage and later remodelled into an upmarket international airport, it now serves executive jets, event traffic and forest-fire surveillance flights from a single hard-surfaced runway.

Overview

Le Castellet Airport, also known by its IATA code CTT, lies at Le Castellet in the Var department of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, immediately next to the Circuit Paul Ricard racing circuit. It is operated as a high-end business aviation facility by Excelis S.A., and for a visiting sim pilot it offers an interesting mix of a single well-equipped hard runway, striking Provençal hill scenery, and the added visual interest of the racetrack complex adjoining the field.

Airspace & Location

The airfield sits at coordinates 43.2522N, 5.7861E in the hills of Provence, between the Sainte-Baume Regional Natural Park and the Var coastline, at an elevation of 1378 feet. No further detail on the surrounding airspace class or controlling FIR is available from the sources used.

Runways

Le Castellet has a single hard-surfaced, lit runway aligned approximately 12/30. The 30 direction is listed at 5060 feet in length, while the reciprocal 12 direction is listed at 4456 feet; there is no ILS.

Radio & Navigation

The field is served by an AFIS (Aerodrome Flight Information Service) on a frequency of 119 MHz.

Visual Reference Points

The most prominent visual landmark for locating the airfield is the adjacent Circuit Paul Ricard motor-racing venue, immediately next to the runway, along with the surrounding wooded hills of the Sainte-Baume massif.

History

The airfield was developed from 1962 under the drive of Paul Ricard, the visionary businessman and creator of the eponymous aperitif, with the ambition of combining performance, modernity and high standards within a preserved natural setting. Refurbishment, modernisation and restyling work began in May 2001, and by November of that year Le Castellet had become an upmarket international business airport and the second-busiest airport in the Var. The site also plays a role in regional forest-fire surveillance, and in February 2010 a photovoltaic power plant was installed on the roof of the H5 hangar as part of the airport's environmental programme.

The Airfield Today

Le Castellet now operates as a premium business aviation airport, with modern facilities and services for passengers, crews and aircraft, situated next to the Circuit Paul Ricard and close to the five-star Hôtel du Castellet and the three-star Grand Prix Hotel. Published operating hours are 09:00 to 18:00 local time daily in summer and 09:00 to 17:00 local time daily in winter (07:00-16:00 UTC in summer, 08:00-16:00 UTC in winter).
