Châteaudun (LFOC) is a French airfield lying just east of the historic town of the same name in the Eure-et-Loir department, roughly midway between Orléans and Chartres in the Centre-Val de Loire region. It is built around a single very long hard-surfaced runway with no instrument landing system, and its scale as a local employer far exceeds that of the town it adjoins.

Overview

Châteaudun (ICAO: LFOC) sits immediately east of the town of Châteaudun in the Eure-et-Loir department of Centre-Val de Loire. The airfield is known locally as Châteaudun Air Base and is a substantial installation, described as much larger than the town itself and a major local employer. For a simulator pilot it is notable chiefly for its single, very long runway and the presence of a ground-controlled approach facility rather than an ILS, giving it a distinct military-airfield character.

Airspace & Location

The field lies at an elevation of 427 feet, at coordinates 48.0578N, 1.3794E, on the eastern edge of the town of Châteaudun. Châteaudun itself is located about 45 kilometres northwest of Orléans and about 50 kilometres south-southwest of Chartres, placing the airfield roughly in the middle of that line, within the Centre-Val de Loire region.

Runways

Châteaudun has a single physical runway, 10/28, of 7535 feet with a hard surface, lit along its length. There is no ILS.

Radio & Navigation

Approach is provided as BRICY APP on 37.057 MHz and 122.7 MHz. A ground-controlled approach service is available on 37.492 MHz and 123.3 MHz. Tower operates on 125.625 MHz. No ILS or other published instrument approach navaid is associated with the field.

History

Châteaudun Air Base lies just east of the town of Châteaudun and is markedly larger than the settlement it borders, reflecting its role as a major local employer in what is otherwise a predominantly agricultural area.

The Airfield Today

The airfield continues to operate as Châteaudun Air Base and remains a significant employer for the surrounding area, its footprint considerably exceeding that of the town of Châteaudun itself.
