It is one of the major airports of the French capital, with a large-scale runway layout headed by a runway exceeding 11,900 feet in length, and it carries full instrument landing system coverage on most of its runway ends. For a simulator pilot, Orly offers a busy, tightly controlled environment typical of a major European hub, with radar approach and departure services, a tower and ground frequency, and an ATIS broadcast, all of which make it a good test of procedural flying into complex controlled airspace.
Orly lies within controlled airspace classified as Class A, reflecting its status as a major hub aerodrome. It is located in the Ile-de-France region to the south of Paris, at an elevation of 282 feet, and is one of the two principal airports serving the city alongside Charles de Gaulle to the north.
Orly has three physical runways, all hard-surfaced and lit. Runway 06/24 is the longest, listed at 10,977 feet from the 06 threshold and 11,961 feet from the 24 threshold, and is equipped with ILS in both directions. Runway 07/25 measures 10,882 feet from the 07 threshold and 9,465 feet from the 25 threshold, also with ILS available on both approaches. Runway 02/20 is 7,865 feet long in both directions; the 02 approach is served by ILS, while the reciprocal 20 direction is not.
Orly provides a full range of ATC frequencies for arriving and departing traffic: Approach on 123.875 MHz, Departure on 127.75 MHz, Tower on 118.7 MHz, Ground on 121.7 MHz, a preflight/clearance frequency on 121.05 MHz, and ATIS on 131.35 MHz. Instrument approaches are available, with ILS serving runways 06, 24, 07, 25 and 02.
