Brest Bretagne Airport (LFRB) is an international airport serving the city of Brest in Finistère, Brittany, sited in the commune of Guipavas a short distance northeast of the city. It offers a full-length hard runway with an ILS approach alongside a shorter parallel strip, making it a straightforward and well-equipped destination for a simulated cross-country into western France.

Overview

Brest Bretagne Airport, ICAO code LFRB, is an international airport serving Brest in the Finistère department of Brittany, France. Formerly known as Brest Guipavas Airport after the commune in which it sits, the field has grown into the principal air gateway for western Brittany, handling scheduled airline services as well as general aviation movements. For a simulator pilot it offers a long, well-lit main runway with an ILS approach, a parallel short runway, and a genuinely maritime Breton setting worth exploring on approach.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies in the commune of Guipavas, about 10.2 km (6.4 miles) northeast of the centre of Brest, in the Finistère department of Brittany. It is a controlled aerodrome, with an approach service split between two sectors, LANDI and IROISE, and its own tower frequency for aerodrome control.

Runways

Brest Bretagne has two physical runways. The main runway, 07R/25L, is 10,157 feet long with a hard, lit surface and is served by an ILS on the 25L approach direction. A shorter parallel runway, 07L/25R, measures 2,302 feet, also with a hard, lit surface. The airport sits at an elevation of 305 feet.

Radio & Navigation

Aerodrome control is on TWR 120.1 MHz. Approach control is provided on two frequencies: 122.4 MHz, callsign LANDI, and 135.825 MHz, callsign IROISE. The ATIS broadcasts on 129.35 MHz. The main runway, 25L, is equipped with an ILS for instrument approaches.

History

The site traces its origins back to the First World War, when the American Navy built two airship hangars on the Lanrus moors in Guipavas in 1917 for anti-submarine patrol operations. The site was abandoned once the war ended, but by 1931 the Brest Chamber of Commerce recognised the need for a permanent local airport and began investing in the location, laying the groundwork for what would eventually become today's Brest Bretagne Airport in the commune of Guipavas.

The Airfield Today

Brest Bretagne today operates as a busy regional international airport, with scheduled services flown by carriers including Air France, Volotea, Transavia, easyJet, Aer Lingus, Chalair and the local operator Finistair, linking Brest to destinations such as Paris, Lyon, London Gatwick, Dublin, Marseille, Toulouse, Barcelona and Marrakech, together with seasonal charter routes across the Mediterranean and beyond. The airport provides a full instrument approach on its main runway and maintains tower and approach radio services throughout its hours of operation.
