Deauville-Normandie Airport (ICAO: LFRG, IATA: DOL) is a small international airport on the Côte Fleurie in Normandy, a few kilometres east of Deauville. It combines seasonal holiday and charter services to the Mediterranean with business aviation, horse freight and recreational flying, and offers an ILS-equipped runway that makes it a straightforward destination for visiting pilots.

Overview

Deauville-Normandie is a small international airport serving the Côte Fleurie area of Normandy, handling scheduled and seasonal charter flights to holiday destinations across Europe and the Mediterranean alongside business aviation, horse freight and recreational flying. It is operated under a public service delegation, most recently by SEALAR, and sits within the Aéroports de Normandie network alongside Caen-Carpiquet, Rouen and Le Havre-Octeville. For a visiting sim pilot it offers a hard, lit runway with an ILS, a control tower and approach service, and a relatively uncomplicated approach environment compared with the region's larger airports.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies close to Saint-Gatien-des-Bois in Calvados, a short distance east of Deauville on the Côte Fleurie coast of Normandy, at coordinates 49.3633N, 0.16E and an elevation of 466 feet. It is served by its own approach and tower frequencies, placing it within controlled airspace during hours of operation, and is one of four airports coordinated under the Aéroports de Normandie grouping, the others being Caen-Carpiquet, Rouen-Seine Valley and Le Havre-Octeville.

Runways

Deauville-Normandie has a single physical runway, 12/30, of hard surface construction and lit for night operations. The database records a length of 7011 feet for runway 30 and 6907 feet for runway 12. An ILS approach serves runway 30.

Radio & Navigation

The airport operates Deauville Approach on 120.35 MHz, Deauville Tower on 118.3 MHz and a Deauville Information service on 119.825 MHz, with an ATIS broadcast on 136.15 MHz. Runway 30 is served by an ILS; the field is also equipped with DME and high-intensity approach and runway lighting, including an approach light bar for runway 30 and a PAPI for runway 12.

History

Deauville-Normandie Airport was established under the impetus of Eugène Colas, mayor of Deauville between 1919 and 1935, and the field marked close to a century of operation around the time of its recent terminal redevelopment. Formerly known as Deauville-Saint-Gatien Airport, it has over the decades received a number of notable visitors, including Queen Elizabeth II, Pope John Paul II, Angela Merkel and Justin Trudeau, as well as film stars attending the Deauville American Film Festival. The airport has long been recognised for its role as a border inspection post for the international horse trade, reflecting Normandy's equestrian heritage.

The Airfield Today

Deauville-Normandie continues to handle scheduled and seasonal charter flights to more than thirty holiday destinations across Europe and the Mediterranean, alongside business and private aviation, and remains an important centre for the international air transport of horses, with approval to handle up to twenty animals at a time. Recreational flying is also based at the field, with introductory flights and pilot training offered over the Côte Fleurie. The airport is classified as Category D depending on aircraft type, and higher levels of fire cover for certain movements require prior permission. Fuel available includes both Jet A1 and Avgas, and the airport is open year-round, with stated hours of 0900 to 1800 local time in both summer and winter seasons.
