Quimper-Cornouaille Airport, also known as Quimper-Bretagne, serves the city of Quimper from the commune of Pluguffan in Finistère, Brittany. Once host to scheduled airline services to Paris-Orly, it has been without regular commercial flights since late 2023 and today functions as a general aviation and business aviation field with a long main runway well suited to a range of aircraft.

Overview

Quimper-Cornouaille Airport, latterly branded Quimper-Bretagne, lies at Pluguffan a short distance southwest of Quimper in the Finistère department of Brittany. It was built to a scale well beyond most French regional fields, with a long hard runway that once supported airline services, and it remains of interest to visiting pilots both for its history and for the facilities that scale left behind, even though scheduled traffic has now ceased.

Airspace & Location

The airfield sits at Pluguffan, about 5.5 km southwest of Quimper, in the Finistère department of Brittany. It is served by an approach and tower service, with Iroise Approach and Quimper Tower providing radio coverage for arriving and departing traffic.

Runways

The airfield has two physical runways. The main runway, 09/27, is asphalt and lit, with a length recorded as 6672 ft on the 09 heading and 7014 ft on the 27 heading. A shorter secondary runway, 04/22, is also asphalt and lit, at 2487 ft. There is no ILS. Field elevation is 282 ft.

Radio & Navigation

Arriving and departing aircraft can expect an approach service from Iroise Approach on 119.575 MHz, with Quimper Tower operating on 118.625 MHz for the aerodrome itself.

History

The airfield has been known at various times as Quimper-Pluguffan, Quimper-Cornouaille and, most recently, Quimper-Bretagne. Commercial service began in the 1960s with Air Inter flights to Paris-Orly. In more recent years Chalair Aviation operated the Orly route, but this ended on 24 November 2023 with the last scheduled flight, after which the airport was left without regular airline service.

The Airfield Today

As of March 2024 there is no regular commercial airline service at Quimper airport, with former passenger traffic having transferred to Brest Bretagne Airport, roughly an hour's drive to the north. The field continues to be used for general and business aviation.
