Strasbourg Airport (LFST) is a controlled international aerodrome in Entzheim, a commune some 10 km west-southwest of Strasbourg in the Bas-Rhin département of Alsace. It offers a single long, ILS-equipped runway and full air traffic control services, making it a straightforward and well-equipped destination for pilots visiting eastern France near the German and Swiss borders.

Overview

Strasbourg Airport serves as the international gateway for the city of Strasbourg, seat of the European Parliament, and lies in the commune of Entzheim in the Bas-Rhin département of the Alsace région. For a visiting pilot it offers a single substantial hard-surfaced runway with ILS approaches and full radar and tower services, set within a compact, single-terminal airport that has seen scheduled airline traffic ebb and flow over the decades.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits in the Bas-Rhin département of the Grand Est region, in the commune of Entzheim, about 10 km west-southwest of Strasbourg city centre. It is a controlled aerodrome with its own approach, tower and ground frequencies, and the nearest larger international airports are EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg, some 154 km to the south, and Stuttgart Airport, around 168 km to the northeast.

Runways

Strasbourg has a single physical runway, 05/23, oriented northeast-southwest. It is 7856 ft long with a hard surface, is lit, and is served by an ILS, making it suitable for a wide range of aircraft types and instrument approaches in poor weather.

Radio & Navigation

Pilots can expect the following services: Strasbourg Approche on 120.41 MHz, 119.58 MHz or 133.1 MHz; Strasbourg Information (FIS) also on 120.41 MHz or 119.58 MHz; Strasbourg ATIS on 126.93 MHz; Strasbourg Sol (ground) on 121.805 MHz; and Strasbourg Tour (tower) on 119.25 MHz. The field is equipped with an ILS on runway 05/23.

History

Strasbourg Airport is located in Entzheim, historically a separate commune from Strasbourg itself, and has long served as the city's air link. Traffic declined after Ryanair suspended services in 2004 following a court ruling that the airline had received illegal subsidies from the airport, and passenger numbers were further affected by the opening of the LGV Est high-speed rail line to Paris, which cut journey times dramatically. Air France ceased operating its Strasbourg to Paris-Charles de Gaulle route on 2 April 2013, transferring those passengers onto rail services, and the second phase of the LGV Est, opened in July 2016, reduced the Strasbourg to Paris rail journey to 1 hour 48 minutes, further reshaping the airport's traffic patterns. Despite these setbacks, traffic at the airport has grown again since 2011. The airport consists of a single two-storey passenger terminal building.

The Airfield Today

Strasbourg continues to operate as a minor international airport with scheduled airline services connecting to European hubs, alongside general aviation movements supported by its full complement of approach, tower and ground radio services and its ILS-equipped runway.
