Elefsis Air Base lies at Elefsina in the Attica region of Greece, a short distance west of Athens, and is home to the Hellenic Air Force's 112 Combat Wing. It is a busy military installation with a long, ILS-equipped runway and a notably diverse resident fleet, making it a distinctive sight for any simulator pilot flying in the Athens area, though it is not a civil airfield and access requires prior permission.
Elefsis Air Base sits at Elefsina in Attica, close to Athens, at an elevation of 72 feet. It is the home of the Hellenic Air Force's 112 Combat Wing, one of the largest and most varied wings in the Hellenic Air Force, and hosts an unusually broad mix of transport, maritime patrol, firefighting, VIP and rotary-wing squadrons alongside a major aircraft depot. For a simulator pilot the base is of interest chiefly for its long, ILS-served runway and its role as a stopover point for foreign military traffic, including USAF aircraft, rather than as a civil destination.
The base is located in the Attica region at Elefsina, a short distance west-northwest of central Athens, within the wider Athens terminal area. It operates under air traffic control, with approach service provided by Athinai APP and a tower frequency for the aerodrome itself, reflecting its status as an active military field within busy Athens-area airspace.
Elefsis has a single physical runway aligned 18/36, with a hard, lit surface. Runway 18 has a length of 8514 feet and runway 36 a length of 8387 feet, and an ILS is provided to serve runway 36, giving the field an instrument approach capability suited to its role as a military transport and combat base.
Approach control is provided by Athinai APP on 119.1 MHz, with the base's own tower operating on 120.15 MHz. An ILS is available for runway 36, supporting instrument approaches into the field.
Elefsis Air Base was established in 1946 and has since grown into the largest and most complex wing structure in the Hellenic Air Force, the 112 Combat Wing. Its squadrons over the years have flown a remarkable range of types, including the Gulfstream V and ERJ-135LR of 352 Mira, the P-3B of 353 Mira, the C-27J of 354 Mira, the CL-215 and CL-415 firefighting aircraft of 355 Mira, the C-130B/H Hercules of 356 Mira, the A-109E, AB-205A and Bell 212 helicopters of 358 Mira, the EMB-145H of 380 Mira, and the AS-332 Puma of 384 Mira. The first Greek C-130H arrived at Elefsis on 29 September 1975, replacing the C-47 Dakotas previously flown by 356 Mira, and for many years Hercules from the base supported Greek forces deployed with NATO's KFOR mission in Kosovo via a regular Elefsis-Naples-Sarajevo-Pristina route. The Hellenic Air Force Aircraft Depot (HAFAD) was relocated to Elefsis in a process completed in early 2016, with a new aircraft and helicopter hangar inaugurated in November of that year to support depot-level maintenance.
Elefsis remains an active Hellenic Air Force base under the 112 Combat Wing, with resident squadrons covering VIP transport, maritime patrol, tactical airlift, aerial firefighting, helicopter and reconnaissance roles, alongside the Hellenic Air Force Aircraft Depot. The base is regularly used as a stopover point for foreign military aircraft, including USAF types such as the CV-22B. As a military installation, prior permission is required for any visit or flight, and the base periodically opens to the public for organised open days, such as those held around the Feast of the Archangel Michael, when static displays of resident and visiting aircraft can be seen.
