Kefalonia Airport (ICAO: LGKF, IATA: EFL), officially named after Anna Pollatou, serves the island of Cephalonia in the Ionian Sea and lies in the island's southwest, close to the village of Svoronata and about 8 km from the capital Argostoli. It is a substantial single-runway airport built to handle scheduled and seasonal charter jet traffic from across Europe, making it a useful and visually striking VFR and IFR destination for pilots exploring the Ionian Islands.

Overview

Kefalonia Airport is a public airport on the island of Cephalonia, Greece, operated under a long-term concession by the Fraport AG/Copelouzos Group joint venture. It handles a substantial volume of seasonal leisure traffic from the United Kingdom and continental Europe, and its long hard runway set against the island's hills and coastline makes it an interesting stop for simulator pilots flying the Ionian chain.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits in the southwest of Cephalonia, roughly 8 km from Argostoli, the island's capital, near the village of Svoronata. It serves the whole island, which was formerly divided into several municipalities including Leivatho, the district the airport was originally built to serve.

Runways

Kefalonia Airport has a single physical runway, 14/32, of hard surface and lit. Runway 14 measures 7,892 ft in length, while the reciprocal Runway 32 measures 7,154 ft; the difference in published lengths reflects displaced thresholds on the two ends. Field elevation is 39 ft, and there is no ILS approach.

Radio & Navigation

Air-to-ground communication is provided on 563.7 MHz. An Aerodrome Flight Information Service (AFIS) operates on 122.25 MHz for arriving and departing traffic.

Visual Reference Points

The airport lies near the village of Svoronata on the southwest coast of Cephalonia, with Argostoli, the island's capital, visible to the north across the bay, providing a useful landmark for pilots orientating themselves on approach.

History

Kefalonia Airport opened in 1971 to improve transport links for the former municipality of Leivatho, in the island's southwest. A new runway and the terminal building then in use were constructed during the 1980s. In December 2015 the Greek state finalised the privatisation of the airport, along with thirteen other regional Greek airports, in an agreement with the Fraport AG/Copelouzos Group joint venture, which took over operation of the fourteen airports for a forty-year term from April 2017. The new operator subsequently carried out a major upgrade programme, including a new terminal building completed in 2019 that replaced the earlier facility.

The Airfield Today

Kefalonia Airport today functions as a busy seasonal gateway to the island, handling scheduled year-round services alongside a wide range of seasonal charter and low-cost flights from the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, and other European countries. It is operated commercially by the Fraport AG/Copelouzos Group joint venture as part of a group of fourteen Greek regional airports.
