Karpathos Island National Airport (LGKP/AOK) serves the Greek island of Karpathos in the Dodecanese, lying in the South Aegean roughly 15 km south-east of the island's capital, Pigadia. It handles scheduled and seasonal charter services from Greece and across Europe, making it a useful VFR and IFR destination for pilots visiting this part of the Aegean.

Overview

Karpathos Island National Airport is a medium-sized public aerodrome on the Greek island of Karpathos, operated by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority. It is one of the smaller international gateways in Greece but carries significant seasonal traffic, linking the island to Athens, Rhodes and a range of European cities. For a visiting sim pilot, its single long hard-surfaced runway, Aegean island setting and mix of airline and general aviation movements make it a rewarding stop in the region.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies on Karpathos in the South Aegean, about 15 km south-east of the island's main town, Pigadia. Its published coordinates place it at 35.4211N 27.1458E, in the southern part of the island close to the coast.

Runways

The airport has a single physical runway aligned 12/30, surfaced in hard asphalt and lit. Published distances vary slightly with direction and threshold: figures of 7,477 ft and 7,378 ft are given for the two ends, alongside shorter published lengths of 6,866 ft in each direction, reflecting different declared distances rather than separate runways. There is no ILS.

Radio & Navigation

Aeronautical data lists an air-ground (A/G) frequency of 563.7 MHz and an RDO INFO frequency of 122.1 MHz for Karpathos. No ILS or other instrument approach aids are listed for the field.

History

The airport first became operational in 1970 with very limited facilities, initially comprising a small terminal building of only 500 square metres. Between 2005 and 2009 the airport was substantially redeveloped, and the new terminal was inaugurated on 25 July 2009. By 2023 the airport's buildings covered an area of 12,500 square metres, reflecting the scale of that expansion.

The Airfield Today

Karpathos Island National Airport is operated by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority and today handles a mix of scheduled and seasonal charter flights connecting the island to Athens, Rhodes and numerous destinations across Europe, alongside general aviation movements. Fuel is available on site. The airport's single long runway and coastal setting on the island's southern side make it a straightforward if occasionally busy seasonal destination for visiting pilots.
