Limnos Airport, known locally as Ifestos after the god Hephaestus, serves the North Aegean island of Limnos with two long paved runways well suited to both light aircraft and larger jet traffic. Operated by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority since 1959, it lies some way from the island's main town of Mirina and handles both domestic scheduled services and seasonal international charters. For the visiting VFR pilot it offers generous runway length and straightforward radio procedures on a single combined approach and tower frequency.

Overview

Limnos Airport sits on the island of Limnos in the North Aegean, operated by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority under the name "Ifestos" (Hephaestus), a reference to the island's mythological association with the Greek god of fire and metallurgy. It is of interest to visiting pilots as a substantial paved-runway field on an otherwise rural Aegean island, handling year-round domestic flights and seasonal international charter traffic alongside general aviation movements.

Airspace & Location

The airport is located on Limnos Island in the North Aegean region of Greece, around 18 kilometres from the island's capital, Mirina.

Runways

Limnos has two parallel hard-surfaced runways aligned 04/22, both lit. The longer pair, 04R/22L, is approximately 9,865 feet in length, while the shorter parallel pair, 04L/22R, measures approximately 8,325 feet. Field elevation is 10 feet.

Radio & Navigation

Air-to-ground communication is available on 563.7 MHz. Approach and Tower services share a single frequency of 122.1 MHz. There is no ILS at the field.

History

Limnos Airport has operated since 1959 under the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority. It carries the name "Ifestos", after Hephaestus, the ancient Greek god of fire and metallurgy, who according to mythology was cast out from Mount Olympus and landed on Lemnos, where the islanders cared for him and were in turn taught the art of metalworking.

The Airfield Today

The airport supports domestic scheduled flights throughout the year and handles chartered international flights, particularly during the busier summer season.
