Aktion National Airport (LGPZ/PVK) sits on the low-lying Aktion Peninsula in Acarnania, western Greece, serving the twin resort areas of Preveza and Lefkada. Aktion National Airport has two paved physical runways aligned roughly 07/25. Aktion National Airport commenced operations in 1968 as a military airfield and has long been used by Hellenic Air Force Command and NATO. On 14 July 1996 a NATO-operated Boeing E-3 Sentry overran the runway during an aborted takeoff, after the crew believed the aircraft had struck birds; the aircraft broke up on impact with a sea wall, with only minor injuries and no fatalities, though subsequent investigation found no evidence of bird ingestion and the aircraft was written off. In December 2015 the airport was privatised along with thirteen other regional Greek airports, with a Fraport AG/Copelouzos Group joint venture taking over operation of the sites for 40 years from autumn 2016; the new operator subsequently invested in lighting, airside marking, sanitary facilities and fire-safety works.
Today Aktion remains a joint civil-military aerodrome, handling substantial seasonal passenger traffic alongside its continuing role for the Hellenic Air Force and NATO. Passenger numbers have grown strongly in recent years, with the airport recording its highest-ever annual total in 2019 before recovering post-pandemic to further record years through the mid-2020s, reflecting heavy seasonal charter and low-cost carrier demand from the UK and continental Europe into the Preveza-Lefkada holiday region.
