Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport, formerly Ferihegy, is Hungary's principal gateway, lying south-east of the capital and equipped with two long parallel instrument runways. For the simulator pilot it offers a busy Class C environment with full ATC services, ILS approaches and the operational character of a major European hub.

Overview

Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport is the international airport serving the Hungarian capital and by far the largest and busiest of the country's commercial aerodromes. It is the home base of Wizz Air and an important operating base for Ryanair, and its two long parallel runways and full range of ATC services make it a substantial and rewarding destination for a simulator pilot flying international or airliner-type operations into Central Europe.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies around 16 kilometres south-east of the centre of Budapest, close to the border with Pest county, at coordinates 47.4394N, 19.2619E and an elevation of 449 feet. As Hungary's principal international aerodrome it sits within controlled airspace served by Budapest Area Control and Approach, with the field itself under tower and ground control.

Runways

The airport has two physical runways, both hard-surfaced and lit, each fitted with ILS. Runway 13L/31R is the longer, at 12,176 feet in the 13L direction and 12,124 feet as 31R. Runway 13R/31L measures 9,845 feet as 13R and 9,880 feet as 31L.

Radio & Navigation

Budapest Area Control (ACC) works on 129.7 MHz. Approach services include a Director position on 119.5 MHz. Ground movement is split between Apron Guide South on 122.45 MHz and Apron Guide West on 131.55 MHz. The ATIS broadcasts on 132.375 MHz, Clearance Delivery operates on 134.55 MHz, Ground on 121.9 MHz, and Tower on 118.1 MHz. Both runways are equipped with ILS for instrument approaches.

History

The airport was previously known as Budapest Ferihegy International Airport, commonly shortened to Ferihegy, before being renamed in 2011 in honour of the composer Franz Liszt (Liszt Ferenc) on the two-hundredth anniversary of his birth. The facility covers some 1,515 hectares and has long served as Hungary's principal link to Europe, Africa, the Middle East and the Far East. In June 2024 the Hungarian government and Vinci Airports jointly purchased the airport's operating company from its previous owners, taking an 80 per cent and 20 per cent stake respectively.

The Airfield Today

Today the airport remains the largest and busiest in Hungary, functioning as the primary headquarters of Wizz Air and a significant base for Ryanair alongside its scheduled international services. Its scale and two long, ILS-equipped runways make it representative of a major European hub for simulator operations.
