Debrecen International Airport (LHDC) is Hungary's second-largest airport, serving the city of Debrecen in Hajdu-Bihar County in the east of the country. Operating under Aerodrome Flight Information Service rather than full air traffic control, it offers a long, lit main runway with an ILS approach, making it a substantial and interesting destination for the visiting simulator pilot despite its comparatively modest scheduled traffic.

Overview

Debrecen International Airport lies on the eastern edge of Debrecen, Hungary's second city, and is the country's second-busiest airport after Budapest. It handles a modest but varied mix of scheduled leisure and low-cost services to destinations across Europe alongside general aviation and historical military traffic, giving it a character quite different from the much larger Budapest hub two hours' drive to the west. For a simulator pilot it is notable for its unusually long runways relative to its traffic levels, a legacy of its military past, combined with a straightforward ILS approach and AFIS-only operation.

Airspace & Location

The airfield sits at the eastern edge of the city of Debrecen in Hajdu-Bihar County, in eastern Hungary, roughly two hours' drive east of Budapest. It is a large-airport-class facility with customs handling, reflecting its role as an international gateway for the region.

Runways

Debrecen has two parallel hard-surfaced runway pairs aligned 04/22. The primary runway, 04R/22L, is 8190 ft long on the 04R threshold and 7219 ft on the reciprocal 22L threshold, is lit, and offers an ILS approach to runway 04R. The second, closely parallel runway, 04L/22R, is 8063 ft long from the 04L threshold and 8062 ft from 22R, and is also lit but has no instrument approach. Field elevation is 354 ft.

Radio & Navigation

Debrecen operates an Aerodrome Flight Information Service rather than full air traffic control, on 125.9 MHz. Area traffic information is available from Budapest Information on 133.3 MHz. An ILS is provided for runway 04R, as noted above.

History

The airfield's origins go back to the early twentieth century, with the first official regular mail flight departing in 1930; from that date it also carried domestic passenger traffic linking Debrecen with Budapest and other Hungarian cities, alongside sport and military flying. Between 1946 and 1968 Debrecen Airport served as an emergency diversion field for Budapest Airport. After the Second World War the airfield came under Soviet air force control until 1990, with one of the last Soviet units based there, the 727th Guards Bomber Aviation Regiment, departing in 1987. The political changes of the early 1990s brought a revival of the airport, with the launch of international civilian traffic alongside a renewed sports aviation presence.

The Airfield Today

Today Debrecen International Airport operates as a scheduled international airport connecting the city with a range of European destinations, alongside general and sport aviation activity that reflects its long-standing civilian and military heritage. Pilots planning a visit should note that the aerodrome is AFIS-operated rather than fully controlled, and prior permission should be arranged before any general aviation visit.
