Bari Karol Wojtyła Airport lies on the Adriatic coast about 8 km northwest of Bari city centre, in the Apulia region of southern Italy. Named after Pope John Paul II, it began life as a 1930s military airfield and today serves as a busy international gateway for the city, equipped with a single long runway and full ILS approach on one direction. For the visiting simulator pilot it offers a straightforward hard-surface runway with instrument approach capability set against the Adriatic coastline.

Overview

Bari Karol Wojtyła Airport (ICAO: LIBD, IATA: BRI) serves the city of Bari in Apulia, southern Italy, and lies roughly 8 km northwest of the city centre near the Palese neighbourhood, from which it takes its older name. It is operated as a large civil airport by Aeroporti di Puglia and is named in honour of Pope John Paul II, born Karol Wojtyła. For a sim pilot the field is a substantial single-runway commercial airport on the Adriatic coast, with a long hard runway and an ILS on one direction, making it a good study field for airline-style approaches or as a coastal VFR destination.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits on the Adriatic coast just northwest of Bari, within Apulia's coastal plain. As a large, ATC-controlled international airport with both an approach and tower service, it forms a significant piece of controlled airspace along this stretch of the Adriatic coast.

Runways

Bari has a single physical runway orientated 07/25, of hard surface and lit along its length. Runway 07 is 8,019 feet long and equipped with an ILS, while runway 25 extends to 9,825 feet. Field elevation is 148 feet.

Radio & Navigation

Air traffic services are provided by Bari Approach on 119.5 MHz and Bari Tower on 118.3 MHz. Runway 07 is served by an ILS approach, giving instrument-rated pilots a precision approach into the field from the northeast.

History

The airfield originated in the 1930s as a military base built by the Regia Aeronautica. During the Italian Campaign of the Second World War it was captured by the British Eighth Army in late September 1943 and converted into an Allied airfield, subsequently used by the Royal Air Force and the United States Army Air Forces' Twelfth and Fifteenth Air Forces, as well as by the Italian Co-Belligerent Air Force and the Balkan Air Force, serving both as an operational base and a command and control centre until the war's end in May 1945. After the war it passed to the postwar Italian Air Force. Civil flights began in the 1960s, when Alitalia started scheduled services to Rome, Catania, Palermo, Ancona and Venice, later operated by ATI. The introduction of the DC-9-30 required a new runway, while the former military buildings continued to serve as the passenger terminal. A new terminal building, originally planned as a cargo facility, opened in 1981. Further development followed the 1990 FIFA World Cup, when the runway was extended and the terminal upgraded, with additional renovation in 2000. Rising traffic prompted a major redevelopment beginning in 2002, including a new passenger terminal completed in 2005, a new control tower built between 2005 and 2006, and a further runway extension started in 2006.

The Airfield Today

Bari Karol Wojtyła Airport now operates as a busy international airport handling scheduled, seasonal and charter services for a wide range of European carriers. It is a focus city for low-cost operators including Ryanair and Volotea, alongside numerous other scheduled airlines. The airport is equipped with an ILS approach for runway 07 and full tower and approach radio services, reflecting its role as a significant commercial aerodrome on Italy's Adriatic coast.
