Pantelleria Airport sits on the small volcanic island of Pantelleria off the southwestern coast of Sicily, roughly midway between Sicily and Tunisia. A former military airfield that transferred to civilian state ownership in 2016, it retains a strong military heritage alongside scheduled and seasonal charter flights, making it a distinctive and remote destination for VFR pilots exploring the central Mediterranean.

Overview

Pantelleria Airport is the sole airfield serving the island of Pantelleria, a volcanic outpost of Sicily lying closer to Tunisia than to the Italian mainland. It combines a public civil terminal with a continuing Air Force presence, and its blend of wartime infrastructure, isolated island setting and rugged approach paths give it real character for a simulator pilot seeking something off the beaten track in the central Mediterranean.

Airspace & Location

The airfield lies on Pantelleria island, about 5 kilometres from the town centre, within Italian airspace over the Sicilian Channel between Sicily and Tunisia. Given its military heritage and continuing Air Force detachment, pilots should expect a controlled environment typical of a joint-use civil/military aerodrome; no further detail on the surrounding airspace classification is available in the sources consulted.

Runways

Pantelleria has two physical runways. Runway 08/26 is the longer, hard-surfaced and lit, with 08 measuring 6284 ft and 26 measuring 5943 ft. Runway 03/21 is shorter, also hard-surfaced and lit, with 03 at 2406 ft and 21 at 3586 ft. There is no ILS at the field.

Radio & Navigation

The tower frequency is 118.45 MHz. No published instrument approach or navaid information is included in the sources reviewed.

Joining & Circuit Procedures

No specific joining, circuit height or noise-abatement procedures are given in the sources reviewed.

Visual Reference Points

No published visual reference points are given in the sources reviewed; the island of Pantelleria itself, rising from the sea roughly midway between Sicily and Tunisia, together with the airfield's position about 5 kilometres from the town, serves as the principal visual landmark for pilots approaching from any direction.

History

Pantelleria Airport dates from 1938 and served as a military airfield for much of its existence, including use during the Second World War, when it was one of the airfields associated with United States Army Air Forces operations in Italy. A notable feature from this era is an underground hangar 340 metres long and 26 metres wide, completed in 1939 and known as the Nervi hangar after its designer. The airport remained a military base until 2016, when it was transferred to state civilian ownership, though an Air Force detachment has continued to operate there. The airport's terminal interior and apron also featured in the 2016 film A Bigger Splash, starring Tilda Swinton.

The Airfield Today

Today Pantelleria functions as a public airport offering both scheduled and seasonal charter services connecting the island to Sicily and mainland Italy, alongside its continuing Air Force detachment. No details on flying clubs, fuel availability, opening hours or simulator scenery are given in the sources reviewed.
