Alghero-Fertilia Airport lies on Sardinia's north-western coast near the village of Fertilia, a short distance from the city of Alghero, and is one of the island's three principal airports alongside Cagliari and Olbia. Operated by SO.GE.A.AL, it offers a single long, ILS-equipped runway that has made it a reliable destination for both scheduled and low-cost traffic, and it retains a history stretching back to its origins as a military field in the late 1930s.

Overview

Alghero-Fertilia Airport serves the city of Alghero and the surrounding Riviera del Corallo area of northern Sardinia. It is operated by SO.GE.A.AL and functions as an international airport handling scheduled and charter services, with Ryanair having based aircraft there. For a visiting VFR or IFR pilot, the field's chief point of interest is its single, unusually long runway with an ILS, a legacy of decades of civil and military development on the site.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits about 4.3 nautical miles north-northwest of Alghero, close to the village of Fertilia, on the north-western coast of Sardinia, Italy. It is served by its own approach and tower frequencies, indicating controlled airspace around the field appropriate to a medium international airport.

Runways

Alghero-Fertilia has one physical runway, 02/20, oriented roughly north-south. It measures approximately 9,856 ft (runway 02) and 9,855 ft (runway 20) in length, with a hard surface and runway lighting on both directions. Runway 20 is equipped with an ILS approach, and the field lies at an elevation of 75 ft.

Radio & Navigation

Pilots should expect to work Approach on 128.55 MHz and Tower on 118.85 MHz, with the ATIS broadcast on 125.025 MHz. An ILS is available for runway 20, supporting instrument approaches to that end of the runway.

History

The airport opened in March 1938 as a military airfield and during the Second World War was equipped with a 700-metre runway. After the war the runway was lengthened and improved, and in the early 1960s civil activities moved to the eastern side of the site, with an old hangar pressed into service as a passenger terminal; a proper terminal followed in 1971. By the mid-1970s the runway had been extended to its current length of around 3,000 metres, making it one of the longest in Italy. In 1980 Alitalia established a flight school at Alghero, training up to 100 pilots a year alongside air taxi and maintenance operations, until the school closed in March 2003. Management of the airport passed to SO.GE.A.AL in November 2007 under a 40-year concession, and from 2009 Ryanair based aircraft and crews at the field, becoming its dominant carrier despite periodic disputes over subsidies and route continuity with the regional authorities.

The Airfield Today

The airport continues to operate as one of Sardinia's three main gateways, handling scheduled and low-cost carrier traffic, with Ryanair maintaining a significant presence. It is operated by SO.GE.A.AL under a long-term concession granted in 2007.
