For a visiting VFR or IFR pilot, Linate is notable for combining a full airline-standard ATC service with an ILS-equipped main runway and a much shorter secondary runway, within a compact and closely controlled airport environment near one of Europe's major cities.

It is served by Milano Approach and Departure control, indicating that operations take place within controlled airspace associated with Milan's terminal area. Traffic permitted is both IFR and VFR. The airport authority notes its position as 4.2 nautical miles east-south-east of the city, underlining its proximity to central Milan compared with the region's other main gateway, Malpensa, to the west.

Runways

Linate has two physical runways. The main runway, 18/36, is 8021 feet long, has a hard surface and is lit, and is equipped with instrument approach facilities. The secondary runway, 17/35, is considerably shorter at 1971 feet, also has a hard surface, and carries an ILS on the 35 approach. The airport as a whole is ILS-equipped.

Radio & Navigation

Pilots should expect to work Milano APP on 132.7 MHz for approach and Milano DEP on 126.75 MHz for departure. The ATIS broadcasts on 135.55 MHz, ground movement is handled on 121.8 MHz, and the tower frequency is 118.1 MHz. An ILS is available for the main runway, supporting instrument approaches into Linate.

Joining & Circuit Procedures

Local traffic regulations at Linate give preferential use to runway 36 for both take-off and landing, subject to wind limits: air traffic control will use this runway provided the tailwind component does not exceed 17 knots on a dry runway or 5 knots on a wet runway, and provided runway braking action is not reported as poor. If a pilot considers that the runway assigned by ATC does not meet operational requirements, an alternative may be requested. Intersection take-offs are available at certain points on the main runway but are usable only at the pilot's request or at the request of the tower, subject to prior authorisation; an intersection take-off from an interior point on runway 36 is reserved for helicopters only. The Airfield Today

Linate operates around the clock (H24) and handles a substantial programme of scheduled domestic and European airline services alongside general aviation movements. All general aviation traffic is handled through a dedicated traffic office, with ground handling provided by operators including Linate West, Sky Services and Universal Aviation Italy, each running within published daily hours.
