Bolzano Airport (LIPB) is a small regional aerodrome lying just south of the city of Bolzano in South Tyrol, northern Italy, at the foot of the Dolomites. It offers a single hard-surfaced runway equipped with an ILS alongside a grass strip, and today serves as the home base for the airline Sky Alps.

Overview

Bolzano Airport, also known as Aeroporto di Bolzano or San Giacomo/Bozen airport, sits on the southern edge of the city of Bolzano, the capital of South Tyrol. It is a modest regional field that has passed through periods of scheduled commercial service and periods with none at all, and it is now the home base for the airline Sky Alps. For a simulator pilot the appeal lies in its dramatic Alpine setting, its mix of a lit, ILS-equipped hard runway and a parallel grass strip, and its long and slightly turbulent aviation history.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies immediately south of Bolzano, capital of South Tyrol, in the Adige/Isarco valley at the foot of the Dolomites. It is described as being in the southern part of the city, close to the Isarco river, with the Brennero motorway's "Bolzano Sud" exit leading directly to it.

Runways

Bolzano has two physical runways. The main runway, 01/19, is 4643 ft long with a hard surface, lit, and served by an ILS on runway 01. Alongside it runs a shorter parallel grass runway, 01R/19L, 2096 ft long and also lit. Field elevation is 774 ft.

Radio & Navigation

The field is served by an AFIS unit, callsign INFO, on 120.6 MHz. Runway 01 is equipped with an ILS for instrument approaches.

Visual Reference Points

The airport lies close to the Isarco river on the southern edge of Bolzano, with the Brennero motorway and its "Bolzano Sud" exit passing nearby, both useful features for a pilot orienting visually towards the field.

History

Bolzano Airport was established in October 1926 with a 1,300-metre landing runway. Commercial scheduled services ended on 18 June 2015 when Darwin Airline ceased its publicly-subsidised flights to Rome on behalf of Alitalia, leaving the airport without scheduled traffic. In June 2016 a public opinion poll in South Tyrol decided against continuing government funding for the loss-making airport. In 2019 the South Tyrol government sold the airport to ABD Holding, a private company owned by entrepreneurs Josef Gostner, Rene Benko and Hans Peter Haselsteiner, for 3.8 million euros. The runway was extended to 1,462 metres in late 2021. In March 2021 a Guardia di Finanza helicopter made a crash landing at the airport.

The Airfield Today

Bolzano Airport is now the home base for the airline Sky Alps, which operates scheduled flights from Bolzano to destinations including Lamezia Terme, Dusseldorf, Olbia and Hamburg, as well as seasonal routes such as Stuttgart and London Gatwick.
