Venice Marco Polo Airport is the principal airport serving Venice, Italy, located on the mainland near the village of Tessera rather than on the lagoon islands themselves. It is operated by SAVE S.p.A., which also manages the smaller Treviso Airport nearby. Named after the Venetian traveller Marco Polo, the field handles substantial international scheduled and charter traffic, including long-haul services, and is a base for Volotea, Ryanair, Wizz Air and easyJet, giving simulator pilots a busy, realistic mixed-traffic environment against the dramatic backdrop of the Venetian lagoon.
The airport lies on the Italian mainland at Tessera, a frazione of the comune of Venice, about 7.5 kilometres northeast of Venice city centre. Another airport in the area, Treviso, lies to the northwest and is sometimes informally referred to as a second Venice airport. Marco Polo's proximity to the lagoon and to Venice's historic centre makes it a prominent feature of the local airspace in this part of the Veneto.
The airport has two parallel physical runways. The main runway, 04R/22L, is 10,863 feet long with a hard surface, lit, and equipped with an ILS on the 04R threshold. The second runway, 04L/22R, is approximately 9,095/9,094 feet long, also hard-surfaced and lit. Field elevation is 3 feet.
Radio services include Approach on 118.9 MHz, ATIS on 122.225 MHz, Ground on 121.7 MHz and Tower on 120.2 MHz. An ILS is available on runway 04R for instrument approaches.
The airport's position on the edge of the Venetian lagoon, close to the village of Tessera, and its proximity to the city of Venice itself to the southwest, make the lagoon shoreline and the city's distinctive island layout useful visual references when approaching from the south or east.
The airport takes its name from the Venetian traveller Marco Polo. A modern passenger terminal was opened in 2002, and the field has long served as the primary international airport for Venice, distinct from the smaller Treviso Airport, which handles additional low-cost carrier traffic in the same region. By 2018 the airport was handling over 11 million passengers annually, making it the fourth-busiest airport in Italy at that time.
Venice Marco Polo continues to operate as a major international airport, serving as a base for Volotea, Ryanair, Wizz Air and easyJet, with a wide network of scheduled and seasonal charter routes across Europe and to select long-haul destinations including North America, the Middle East and Asia. It remains managed by SAVE S.p.A., the same operator responsible for Treviso Airport.
