Marina di Campo Airport, also known as Teseo Tesei Airport, serves the Tuscan island of Elba from the village of La Pila, close to the resort town of Marina di Campo itself. A single hard-surfaced runway and AFIS service make it a modest but characterful destination for visiting pilots, set against the backdrop of Elba's coastline and hills.

Overview

Marina di Campo Airport is the airfield serving the Italian island of Elba, situated in the village of La Pila within the municipality of Marina di Campo on the island's south-western side. It is also known locally as Teseo Tesei Airport and is operated by Alatoscana S.p.A. as a combined public and military aerodrome. It ranks as the third busiest airport in Tuscany by passenger numbers, after Pisa and Florence, and for a sim pilot it offers an appealingly compact island approach with sea and hill scenery close to the circuit.

Airspace & Location

The airfield lies on the island of Elba, part of the Tuscan Archipelago in Italy, at coordinates 42.7611N, 10.2397E and an elevation of 20 feet. It sits immediately behind Marina di Campo town, in the La Pila district, on the island's southern coast.

Runways

Marina di Campo has a single hard-surfaced, lit runway aligned 16/34. Runway 16 is recorded at 3,588 feet in length, and runway 34 at 3,403 feet. There is no ILS installed.

Radio & Navigation

The airfield is served by an Aerodrome Flight Information Service (AFIS) on 123.7 MHz. No instrument landing system is available, so arrivals should plan for visual approaches.

History

The airfield began life as a grass airstrip opened in 1963. In 1966 it was taken over by the Milan-based company Transair and developed for commercial traffic, with the regional airline Transavio operating Britten-Norman Islanders and Piaggio P.166 aircraft to Pisa, Milan and Florence. A tarmac runway was not laid until 1991. Transavio ceased operations in 1990, but several other regional carriers, including InterSky, Silver Air and Air Alps, subsequently flew from the field. A new passenger terminal was opened in 2013, with the earlier terminal building retained for other uses.

The Airfield Today

The airport is operated by Alatoscana S.p.A. and continues to handle scheduled and seasonal charter services connecting Elba with mainland Italian airports and destinations in Switzerland and Germany, including flights to Florence and Pisa and seasonal services to Milan-Linate. Silver Air used the field as a focus city until it ceased operations there on 31 October 2023, with other operators such as Small Fly Airlines, Air Mountain and Private Wings since providing seasonal links.
