The site has a long military aviation pedigree. During the Second World War, then known as Grosseto Main, the airfield supported operations by the United States Army Air Forces' Twelfth Air Force: the 86th Fighter Group flew P-47 Thunderbolts from the field between 17 September and 6 November 1944, while the 57th Fighter Group operated from the airfield from 24 September 1944 to 29 April 1945 and again between 7 May and 15 July 1945, flying combat missions in P-47s. The 47th Bomb Group also used the base during this period, flying A-20 and A-26 attack aircraft on night missions. After the war the base returned to Italian military control; in 1959 the 4th Wing relocated its headquarters there, and the 9th Fighter Group was activated on the field on 1 June 1961. The base has continued as a front-line Italian Air Force fighter station ever since, home today to the 4th Stormo and its Eurofighter Typhoons.
