San Francesco d'Assisi – Umbria International Airport (LIRZ/PEG) is the principal airport serving Perugia, the capital of Umbria in central Italy, and lies close to the historic town of Assisi. It offers a single long, lit, hard-surfaced runway with an ILS, making it a capable regional gateway for both airline traffic and general aviation visitors exploring the Umbrian countryside.

Overview

San Francesco d'Assisi – Umbria International Airport, formerly known as Perugia Sant'Egidio Airport, serves the city of Perugia in the Umbria region of central Italy. It is classed as a large regional airport handling scheduled and charter airline services as well as general aviation traffic, and its single runway with ILS approach and night lighting makes it a straightforward and interesting destination for a simulator pilot flying into central Italy.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits in the Umbria region of central Italy, serving Perugia and lying close to the town of Assisi, which is only around 11 kilometres from the field. As an airport handling scheduled airline services, it is served by air traffic control/AFIS in the surrounding airspace, though specific airspace classification details are not covered in the available material.

Runways

The airport has one physical runway, 01/19, orientated roughly north-south. It is 7220 feet long with a hard surface and is lit for night operations. Runway 01 is equipped with an ILS approach, giving instrument-rated pilots a reliable means of joining in poor weather or at night.

Radio & Navigation

The airport provides an AFIS/tower frequency of 118.1 MHz, used both for aerodrome information service and as the tower frequency. Runway 01 offers an ILS approach for instrument arrivals.

Visual Reference Points

The nearby town of Assisi, roughly 11 kilometres from the airport, is a prominent and easily recognisable landmark for pilots orientating themselves in the area during a VFR approach.

History

The airport was formerly known as Perugia Sant'Egidio Airport before adopting its current name, which honours Saint Francis of Assisi and the Umbria region it serves. In 2011 it underwent an expansion that added new terminal facilities designed by the Italian architect Gae Aulenti, part-funded by a government grant awarded to mark the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy.

The Airfield Today

Today the airport operates as a regional international airport handling scheduled and seasonal charter flights from a number of airlines, alongside general aviation movements. Its single ILS-equipped runway, night lighting and AFIS/tower service on 118.1 MHz support year-round operations for visiting pilots.
