Ostrava Leoš Janáček Airport lies at Mošnov in the Moravian-Silesian Region, some 20 kilometres southwest of Ostrava, the Czech Republic's third-largest city. Built originally as a Luftwaffe airfield before the Second World War and rebuilt for civil use in the late 1950s, it is now a regional airport with a single long concrete runway equipped with an ILS, making it a useful and historically interesting destination for the VFR or IFR simulator pilot. Named after the composer Leoš Janáček since 2006, the airfield also hosts the annual NATO Days airshow.
Ostrava Leoš Janáček Airport (ICAO: LKMT, IATA: OSR) serves the Mošnov area of the Moravian-Silesian Region, roughly 20 kilometres southwest of Ostrava, the third-largest city in the Czech Republic. It combines a substantial regional passenger and cargo operation with a strong military heritage, having begun life as a Luftwaffe airfield before the Second World War. Its long, ILS-equipped runway and all-weather capability make it a straightforward and interesting field to fly into on the simulator, whether for airline-style approaches or general aviation circuits.
The airport sits at Mošnov in the Moravian-Silesian Region, about 20 kilometres southwest of Ostrava's city centre. A junction of the D1 motorway lies roughly 8 kilometres to the northwest, with a junction of the D48 motorway about 6 kilometres to the south. The airfield has a single physical runway, 04/22, aligned northeast-southwest. Runway 04 is 11,490 feet long and runway 22 is 11,489 feet long, both on a hard surface and lit. Runway 22 is equipped with an ILS, and the field is certified for all-weather operations to ILS Category II/III standards.
Ostrava Approach can be contacted on 118.375 MHz, 119.375 MHz or 128.525 MHz. The Tower frequency is 120.805 MHz, and ATIS information is broadcast on 118.055 MHz. The field's ILS, associated with runway 22, supports precision approaches in low visibility.
The airfield was laid out in 1939 by the Luftwaffe as a military airfield to support the preparations for the invasion of Poland. Following the German capitulation on 5 May 1945 it was briefly used by the first Czechoslovak aviation division before flying ceased and the land reverted to agricultural use. Construction of a new airfield on the same site began in 1956, with military use given top priority from the outset. Civil operations began officially on 16 October 1959 with the landing of a ČSA Tupolev Tu-104A, and at the same time flying ceased at the inconveniently located Ostrava-Hrabůvka airfield within the city. For its early decades the airport handled mainly domestic Czechoslovak flights, with international services the exception, and it also ran an air-taxi service during the 1960s and 1970s. It has been used as a combined passenger and cargo airport since 1989. The military section was closed in 1993, with responsibility passing to the state airport administration, and on 1 July 2004 responsibility was transferred to the Moravian-Silesian Region with the formation of the operating company Letiště Ostrava a.s. In 2006 the airport, previously known as Ostrava-Mošnov International Airport, was dedicated to the composer Leoš Janáček, and a new passenger terminal opened the same year. Since 2003 the airport has hosted the annual NATO Days event, joined since 2010 by the parallel Czech Air Force Days.
The airport functions today as a regional passenger and cargo hub, home to LR Airlines and offering seasonal charter flights, particularly to Mediterranean holiday destinations. A cargo terminal of some 11,000 square metres supports freight operations, and the maintenance company Job Air Technic is based on the field with several hangars. Owing to its distance from Ostrava's urban area there is no night flying ban or other noise restriction. The airport is open 24 hours a day from 1 June to 30 September, and from 05:00 to 21:00 for the remainder of the year, and is certified for all-weather operations to ILS Category II/III standards.
