Wiener Neustadt East Airport is a long-established general and business aviation field in Lower Austria, lying immediately northeast of the city of Wiener Neustadt and best known as the home of Diamond Aircraft Industries. Dating from 1915, it is among the oldest airfields in Europe and today serves as a busy training, touring and business-jet base rather than a scheduled airline destination.

Overview

Wiener Neustadt East Airport (ICAO: LOAN) serves the city of Wiener Neustadt in Lower Austria and is used exclusively for general and business aviation, with no scheduled airline services. It is notable as the headquarters and factory airfield of Diamond Aircraft Industries, and its long history as a flying site, dating back over a century, makes it a characterful destination for visiting pilots.

Airspace & Location

The airfield lies northeast of the city of Wiener Neustadt and south of the village of Theresienfeld, in the Austrian state of Lower Austria. Vienna International Airport, the nearest major commercial airport, is roughly 60 km to the north. Wiener Neustadt East is the second largest airfield serving the city, the largest being Wiener Neustadt West, a military airfield in the same area, so pilots should take care to identify the correct field when routing into the locality.

Runways

The airfield has a single physical runway, 09/27, of 3,502 feet with a hard surface and runway lighting. There is no ILS approach available, so arrivals and departures are conducted visually.

Radio & Navigation

Traffic at the airfield can be worked on the aerodrome frequency 130.005 MHz. An AFIS service is available on 122.65 MHz, and general information can be obtained on 118.52 MHz, callsign WIEN INFO.

History

The airfield was opened in 1915 by the Österreichische Flugzeugfabrik (ÖFFAG) as a factory airfield, making it one of the oldest airports in Europe. It was used for military purposes during the Second World War and subsequently closed, remaining out of use until 1972 when the Sport Flieger Club Austria (SFCA) took on the lease and resumed flying operations. The SFCA rebuilt the site, which originally had four grass runways, and constructed the asphalt runway that remains in use today. A year after the club's revival, Diamond Aircraft established its headquarters and factory at the airfield, and in 1998 Diamond Aircraft Industries acquired a 51 percent stake in the field, forming Diamond SFCA Ges.m.b.H. to manage operations. In the 1990s Tyrolean Airways ran scheduled Dash 7 services into and out of the airport, though no such services operate today.

The Airfield Today

The airfield continues to operate as a general and business aviation field and remains the home of Diamond Aircraft Industries. It has two aprons approved for commercial operations: the southern apron is used mainly by business jets, while the northern apron serves general aviation traffic and was formerly used for the airport's commercial flights.
