Linz-Hörsching Airport, better known to the military as Vogler Air Base or Fliegerhorst Vogler and marketed commercially as Blue Danube Airport, is a joint civil and military aerodrome in Upper Austria close to the city of Linz. Its long ILS-equipped runway and secondary grass strip, combined with mixed civil, military and rescue traffic, make it an interesting destination for simulator pilots flying in the Danube valley.

Overview

Linz-Hörsching Airport (ICAO LOWL, IATA LNZ) is a dual-use civil and military aerodrome serving Linz in Upper Austria. Also known as Vogler Air Base or Fliegerhorst Vogler, and promoted under the name Blue Danube Airport, it combines scheduled civil air services with Austrian Armed Forces flying and is the base for the Christophorus 10 air rescue helicopter. The mix of instrument-approach civil traffic, military movements and helicopter rescue operations gives it a varied character that sim pilots flying VFR or IFR into Austria may find rewarding.

Airspace & Location

The airfield lies at 48.2353N, 14.1881E at an elevation of 971 feet, in Upper Austria near the city of Linz. It is a customs aerodrome with a military-civilian designation, reflecting its joint use by the Austrian Armed Forces and civil operators. Approach control in the area is provided by Linz Radar.

Runways

The main physical runway, 08/26, is hard-surfaced and lit, measuring 9003 feet in the 08 direction and 9328 feet in the 26 direction, and is equipped with an ILS for instrument approaches. A secondary grass runway, 08L/26R, 1876 feet long and lit, runs alongside it for lighter traffic.

Radio & Navigation

Pilots can expect Linz Radar approach control on 129.62 MHz, tower on 118.8 MHz, ATIS on 128.12 MHz, and an aerodrome/dispatch frequency on 119.75 MHz. The main 08/26 runway is served by an ILS.

History

The site has long operated under its military designation of Fliegerhorst Vogler, reflecting its role as an Austrian Armed Forces base, alongside civil flying under the Linz-Hörsching name. It is also marketed as Blue Danube Airport and serves as the home base for the Christophorus 10 air rescue helicopter.

The Airfield Today

Linz-Hörsching continues to function as a joint civil and military airfield, combining scheduled civil air services with ongoing Austrian Armed Forces flying activity, and it holds customs status. It also hosts the Christophorus 10 air rescue helicopter, adding search and rescue operations to the mix of traffic pilots may encounter.
